301 expired domain?

I know of an expired domain that has one backlink, to its homepage, from a major magazine (has print and online versions). I think that the domain's only backlink, as the site on it was only up briefly. I'm wondering if it's worth getting it and 301-ing it to my somewhat related blog.

If I do it, are there any risks of a Google penalty?

Also, if I do it, should i build a site on the expired domain? I could build a small site that directly relates to my blog. I can't find info on this, most things simply talk about 301'ing the domain itself. (I'm not even clear if that's possible as never tried it)

I don't want any of the expired domain to get indexed as I do not want the name to show anywhere.

      I used to own it, bought it new, but I let it expire about a year ago. Not sure how much time has to pass before links "reset."

    There is no point in building a site on a domain that is going to be redirected. Nobody would ever see it, including search engines.

    I'm not sure I would spend the money doing this though for 1 single link. It would have to be a pretty amazing link that I felt confident would never be lost. I'd want to see that site ranking for some decent keywords on its own.

      OK thanks. The link is from something similar to Architectural Digest. I read an article last night saying it can work to redirect it to a guest post, thus raising the PA of the guest post, may try that. Site I want to point it to is already ranking for a lot of keywords but could use a boost.

    The backlink shows when I check backlink checkers, but the domain is no longer indexed.

    In order to 301, you need to pay for webhosting. Is that worth one lousy link?

    Probably not.

    It would only be good for a few scraps of click thrus.

    That may be worth it. Maybe. Big IF.

    But then, you could forward the domain via the registrant for free.

    Me? I have never seen the crash and burn of buying lame, expired domains.

    Nor feel the need to even waste time finding them.

    But then, I don't believe in instant riches. So I come up with my own doman, water and fertilize the site.

    I know. Crazy, huh?

      I forwarded right from the registrant, so I paid $10 to re-buy the name (re-buy, as I owned it from the beginning, from BEFORE IT EXISTED, if you had read what I wrote. (Anyway, I have hosting already that has unlimited domains, so if i wanted to host a site I would use that.) I built a site that earned the link. However, the site was not up long and I didn't notice the link. Instant riches? I'm a blogger who at times has made a living off it and I know what kind of work it takes. The link could help one of my related sites, which already ranks for thousands of keywords but can always use a boost.

      I don't think you have studied this topic (which I have more, since posting my question). Do you think people buy expired domains because they don't work? They do, quite often, if the site they are linking to is related. To avoid penalty, or create more relevance, you can build another site and link to from THAT site. When you talk about water, the concept of link juice comes to mind. If I had a domain and am rebuying it I really don't see the crime.

        Your question is titled, "301 expired domain."

        Since you asked, but did not know that was useless in your case.....

        So, go on with your bad self... buy as many expired domains as you can...

          As I told you, this was my domain to begin with. Your attack is ridiculous. I did not buy it at an auction nor have I purchased or tried to purchase other expired domains. I set up a permanent redirect with the registrar. In the beginning I considered building a new site on it (not a PBN) but decided against it as it would be competing with the site that is now up that replaced it because the name is too similar. No, I am not an expert in servers. There is a great deal of info online about 301 redirecting expired domain names so there is nothing wrong with that phrasing. I thought this was a place to ask questions, not Monty Python, "No, this is Abuse."
