Backlinking: Use different names, accounts?

How important is it to use different user names and email accounts for any of the Web 2.0 sites you use for backlinking? The question really comes down to whether the major search engines penalize for obvious backlinking efforts.

Thanks, Warriors.

Well, let me just say this:

I appreciate the people who use the same user name for all of their accounts because it makes it really easy for me to find everywhere they use for backlinking so I can add to my list. However, if you don't want other people to be able to find everything you do, you might consider using different names.

For example, there are some people who are well known for backlinking and I can find all 3,294 sites where they have accounts because they use the exact same name for each one. Very useful if I don't feel like buying their product...

Do you really think it is easier to (1) find all instances of peoples profiles on the internet under the same username, rather than (2) reverse engineer simply by finding all the backlinks to a given site (backlink watch, yahoo site explorer, etc.)?

With all of the good automation scripts/programs out there, finding the backlinks is only a small part of the backlink battle.

I think it's easier to find the user names because if you know the username of someone who is skilled at backlinking you only have to do one search for all of their accounts rather than a search for each site and then compare to get a comprehensive list (because they won't link all of their accounts to each website and all of the links won't show). Also, Backlinkwatch (for me) only returns a couple hundred results before it crashes and most of those are dupes. Site explorer works well though.

Yes, it's only a small part of the backlink battle but why make it easier for your competition than it needs to be?

To be clear, I don't think you need multiple email accounts, just multiple user names. What I've done is pick a word that means something to me and add the first three letters of the domain name so it's easy to remember the user ID. For example, if the word that meant something to me was sun, my user ID here would be warsun.

Everyone has their own strategy but for me, I do this for the same reason that I register private domain names. I don't want a simple search turning up my complete online footprint.

I guess it all depends on the extent of the backlinking that you expect to do.

For me, it would only take one search for the backlink. I do a SEO competition search in Market Samurai and I can get the list of backlinks for the top sites.

Also, if one was to signup for an account, and then instantly add a profile, it would be fairly easy to create different usernames, because you don't need to remember all of them over a long period of time. If you were just backlinking one site, then fine. But if one was adding hundreds of backlinks a day, I couldn't imagine the number of unique usernames I would need to keep track of so I could create an account, and then post a profile about two weeks later (my preferred "account aging" time).

Thanks, VB. So, what you're saying is that you're not penalized by the major search engines for doing so? Very cool.

    Thanks for the warning VB!

I don't think it is a problem using the same name. However I woudn't put adsense on these accounts unless you want google to know all these sites are owned by the same person. But maybe I'm being overcautious.

      Hmm...

Wouldn't Google already know the sites are all owned by the same person since all the Adsense blocks have the same Google publisher ID?

Yes. There's nothing wrong with having a lot of sites that have adsense as long as they're quality.

Yes, but the OP said he wished these to be Web 2.0 sites being used for backlinking purposes. I would not put adsense on sites such as these.

Agreed. I'm not sure I really want to give Google a 100% complete trace.

We must be thinking of two different things because I'm thinking of social bookmarking, squidoo, hubpages, forum profiles, etc. and you can't add your adsense to any of those so it's a moot point.

I'm not sure what you're talking about that you'd be able to add adsense to?

              I was thinking of blogger.com

Ah. Then in that case, I'd agree. If the only reason you're making the blog is to link back to another site then I would not put adsense on it. Maybe yahoo so it's still monetized but cross-linking between adsense sites seems like a great way to get banned.

Yes, that's why I'm saying I would be wary of putting any adsense on these accounts.

Don't worry about it. I personally find it hard enough to keep track of all of my profile email accounts as it is, I couldn't imagine the headache of creating even more accounts.

a couple of little tricks let out of the bag for the newbies

since this thread kinda went off topic from the OP (OP's question was answered)

I'll throw in something else for newbies to chew on...

leaving links to your sites in places such as this, especially if you are a packet backlinker is a bad idea.

If I wanted to poach your niche I already know all of your backlinks (methods given up above) so it really a simple matter of recreating content and using the same backlinks as you plus a little extra to jump ahead.

Not that I couldn't go to any of the backlink packet sites and look at the members list and pick a victim that way as well.

And don't think people don't do it.

btw... I typically use a different user name and email for each backlinking campaign I run. Each campaign typically runs between a few hundred to a thousand backlinks and the sites used are always slightly different. I'm not really worried about someone using the same profile sites as I am since I'm also using my own network of sites for backlinks as well.
