I know there is prob already a thread on this but I couldn't seem to find it using the search.

How do I research my competitions backlinks, I know it is some formula you type into google but can't quite remember what it was. Any information on this would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Seth

To research the backlinks to any of your competitions pages or websites, you would take their URL and prefix it with link: when running a search.

    For example: link:whateverdomain.com, or link:whateverdomain.com/somepage.html

Yahoos reporting is much more thorough and extensive than Googles when doing this, however, so you'll probably only want to use Yahoo for it. Google prefers to keep much of the information a secret.

When doing a link: search in yahoo, do it both with and without www, you'll probably see different results.

    You can also use backlinkwatch.com.

Remember that publicly visible links that you see via the "link:" syntax are NOT all the links. The best way to see this is compare what you see on your own site behind the scenes if you use Google WebMaster Tools, and what displays in a link: search.

Use Backlinkwatch.com (which is just Yahoo's index, but much nicer and more info) to get a good sense on what type of links are coming to your site. THEN, do it to your competitor and visit those sites to see if you can secure links.

You could also take their domain name and put it into google like this "domain.com"
It's another way to find all their backlinks and you can also see how they promote their sites. Like whether they use clipmarks, jumptags, making profiles etc

I always use backlinkwatch dot com - very good - shows how many outbound links on that page and your anchor texts that you have used for a specific link.

You could also get seobook.com's toolbar which includes Yahoo Site Links, where backlinkwatch.com pulls it's info. Just install it and besides backlinks you get more than a dozen other SEO based buttons that I use all the time.
