Site has been undergoing Google Dance for a long time now...

I have a site that was, before undergoing the google dance, ranking in the top 3 positions for about 5 keywords. It then disappeared so I assumed it was going through the google dance. However, it has been over a month now and my site is still nowhere to be seen for any keywords. It is still indexed. Last I checked it was somewhere in the 400 position. Can someone tell me what's going on with my site? Because I'm completely baffled..

First of all, how old is your site and how long was your site in the top positions? Is it possible that it was in the top position because of the google dance, and now it has found its rightful place?

Secondly, has any drastic change been made to your backlinks? For eg. if you used to have a sitewide link (like a blogroll link) pointing your site, but it is now gone, that could be a lot of links being dropped suddenly, and this would affect your rankings.

Thirdly, did you make any kind of changes to your site itself that could have affected the on site/page seo? If not, then try to keep gaining some backlinks to your site with focused anchor text.

My website is fairly new. It was indexed around the beginning of October some time. In terms of backlinks, I haven't been really building much links in the past couple of weeks because I've been busy with other stuff. But I purchased a blog commenting service here on the warrior forum for 250 blog comments, which was about 3-4 weeks ago. I did make changes to my site but only by adding content and an adsense, which shouldn't realy affect anything.

Pretty much the same thing happened to me, on a smaller scale. I was showing up in the #20-#30 range for some competitive search terms. All of the sudden, the site vanished completely. About 3 weeks later it came back to where it was.

I knew I wasn't de-listed because some of my inner pages were ranked for less competitive keywords during that time period. Unfortunately it's been a week or so since then without any move up in the SERPS.

this could mean a really positive thing for you as usually most site will rank really well after a longer dance period. I usually see this when I recently add a ton of links. I'm talking in the hundreds and many of them are getting indexed fairly quickly. The odd thing is that my dance only lasts around 3-4 days tops. Did you change anything to your site?

    @andy

i have experienced a similar situation where my new site was ranked #6 for its keyword, then it dropped south of 100, where it remained for six weeks! While it was there, I continued my link building plan for it, and after six weeks, it returned to #21. That was a few days ago, and my link building is still continuing for it. As of this morning, it is at #17. While my site was vacationing south of the serps border, I didn't obsess over it since I build many sites on a weekly basis. Of course, I can't guarantee that your site will do the same, but I wanted to share this experience, which is one of the stranger behaviors I've witnessed for a site that once inhabited page one.

Truthfully Andy you'll notice better results by having a mix of back links such as blogs, articles, profiles, RSS feeds, bookmarking and plain old web links. I even go to the extent of making sure I have PR 0-10 links. Using this method usually gets my sites to rank higher and faster with minimal dance times. I still remain on the first pages with very tough competition keywords. Try that a whirl and let us know how that works out for you. I'll bet you big bucks that it pays off.

Oh I do have a variety of backlinks: profile, bookmarks, feeds, a couple articles etc. I just meant my most recent backlinks have been from blog commenting.

google dance happen for a new site, i think if a site below 6 month will face this problem. Just build your backlinks slowly and you might want to see this to get a better understanding about build backlinks:

Holy crap I just did an onsite SEO scan of my website and learned that I have no h1 tag!!! I have no idea how this happened because I had one before. I currently use allinone seo plugin...noob question but does anyone know how to add an h1 tag? I'm really bad with coding stuff and I try to let the plugin do all the work for me.

Do you guys think the absence of my h1 tag was the reason for my "extended" period of google dancing?

Do you have dynamic content on the page you are trying to rank?

If the content changes frequently you can't see stable results or test effectively...

        H1's are important as well....
I wrote a step by step tutorial about this exact issue...check it out:

For me, the keywords I'm targeting are pretty competitive. Damn New York Times. Here is hoping that I continue to build links and that the end result is a higher ranking than I had previously!

No dynamic content for me. Just a boring html page.

If you are talking about your uncorked ventures site your page titles could do with some serious improvement. Very few people are searching for 'uncorked ventures' for example.

I have a site that will rank in the top 3 for a day or so and then drop down to nowhere. Then a couple of weeks later it will zip back up to the top 3 and then disappear again. This has been going on for 6 months!

It makes a crapload of sales when it is in the top 3 so it sure would be nice if I could get it to stay there. I keep building links to it but the behavior does not change.

Google sure is a strange beast.

Look closely at the content on your page and see if it matches your domain name exactly.

If the information you have on your homepage is not exactly what your domain name is about then it will make it dance longer.
