No TLD Available...put a number at the end?

Hi, I was reading Terry Kyle's 60 day backlinking experiment, and he mentioned that since the domain he wanted (his keyword phrase) was not available as a dot com, he simply added the number 2 onto the end of it, and registered the dot com. I wanted to ask this on his million page thread, but didn't want to ask it if it had already been addressed, and didn't have the patience to sift through all those thread pages. So, what are your thoughts on this? If the top level domain of your keyword phrase is taken (as a .com, ,net, and .org) and you are not worried about branding your site (just wanting search engine traffic) what do you think about putting a number at the end of your keyword phrase to obtain one of the top level domains?
Thanks!

    Here are a few suggestions:

When someone realized that cars.com was taken he creatively chose carsdirect.com. When commerce.com was taken someone tried e-commerce.com. Village.com is taken? Someone chose ivillage.com!

Try adding a suffix like "online" as in laptopsonline.com. Try the prefix "my" or "your" such as myhealthydiet.com if healthydiet.com is not available.

Take the domain painting.com. If it is already taken try
    e-painting.com
    i-painting.com
    paintingdirect.com
    paintingonline.com
    painting4u.com
    classicpainting.com
    creativepainting.com
    mypainting.com
    greatpainting.com
    realpainting.com
    artisticpainting.com
    paintingworld.com
    paintingedge.com
    elitepainting.com
    lastingpainting.com
    paintinggallery.com etc.

I would try several options before using a number unless the number adds value to the name such as live365.com, soccer365.com, sacramento365.com and golf365.com.

Of cource the shorter the domain name the better and the more keyword-based the domain, the better in most cases.

That's the perfect recommendation. I've done this with a really really buyer related term. Buy ***** ******. It only gets like 250 searches per month, but I'm #1 for it right now.

Definitely look for a buyer related term in your keyword research and make the domain that. You can still target the original keywords also and get the benefits of having the keyword in the domain.

I don't know if I would add a 1 or not. I guess it might equate to the same thing. I've never tried it so I don't know if it would matter or not. I find the exact match domains get to the top first, but that you can always get other terms ranking on the site from a little bit more backlinking and a little bit more time.

Thanks for your responses everyone! So, Jacob, when you put these buyer related terms in your domains, is this term actually part of your keyword? For example, buybluebeans.com (is your keyword 'buy blue beans' or just 'blue beans'?) And also is you were targeting the phrase 'blue bean' but your domain was 'bluebeans.com' would your URL be optimized for 'blue bean' AND 'blue beans' or just 'blue beans'?

      Brain=Fried. :rolleyes: LOL

awmi's post is spot on. But yes, a number on the end does no harm at all.

I usually add numbers (like 101,1 and 2), prefixes (best, quick, easy,my,i,e) and suffixes (tricks, tips, secrets, guide, blog, blueprint)
