One person is about to outrank me, so i am a little angry.

I went to linkdiagnosis.com and see he has a lot of strong backlinks on wordpress PR5 and PR6 - but all those links are on the BLOGROLL.

So those are blogs like a travel blog, or some indian blog, all kinds of of sites and they have 15-20 non-related links to other sites on their blogroll.

How did he get those links??? Is this some link-exchange?

    Possibly:

    1. They own them
    2. They bought the links
    3. They are doing a 3 way linking deal
    4. They asked and they got

Off the top of my head, the owner bought the links.

But like GuerrillaIM said, there are many possible reasons.

However, I still think the owner bought these PR5-6 links.

It's the quality of links that matters. Try picking up some tutorials to outdo your competitor or engage an SEO Consultant. There are many link popularity tools available but just using SEO Quake or SEO Firefox is enough for me to know how competitive the competition is.

Guerilla beat me to the list of most likely suspects, but...

i'm not sure why people around here keep getting hung up on relevancy.

yeah, like he said. I vote for #1

Too many people get wrapped up in parasite backlinking and don't realize the importance of building your own network of sites. Sure, 1,000 vBulletin profiles are great (and free) but aren't worth nearly as much as a well developed network of personally owned sites.

+1. Owning your own internet real estate is great as it not only can aid in your backlinking, but has value in itself.

I think we had that debate once already. Look..i myself have many blogs now too, but how many of them gotten decent PR? Sadly, not many.

Just saying that building such a blog network would certainly be something very good to do...but its something very involved which would take a lot of time, work, money etc.... I certainly would not mind my own network of, say, 300+ blogs PR1++...i probably would be the king of rankings

Build up their PR, you can even do it with free/cheap PLR content. I have a couple PR 3-4 domains all from plr content. I've noticed that consistency affects pr most.

I would have to agree with @TomGoodwin

I wouldn't get overly worried about obtaining only relevant links in your niche. Any link from a website with great authority = a great link.

I would email some of these websites where you're finding the competitors links. Just ask them how you get on their blog roll, if they tell you you must pay a monthly fee, it's safe to say these are paid links.

And their probably passing on a good deal of value.. especially from a PR 6 site.

@George.. how do you know your competitor is about to outrank you?

It would be pretty funny if you get this response:

"Hi, thanks for contacting me. However, I'm also the site owner of the site that is beating you and I will continue to crush you. Ha ha."

because he DID, from one day to the other. I had #2 in Google for this KW, right after the "original" site, and now i sank down and he took #1 And then i checked his links and saw those PR6, PR5, PR4 links...
