Is a "friends" page worth doing?

I've created a small blog that I will slowly add content to. I was gone all summer so it just sat.

On the blog I created a friends page.

Basically, if you want a link, link to me and I'll put a link there type of thing.
I know this is very old style and probably worthless but I thought I'd give it a shot.

Obviously only took a second to create it. I didn't have enough posts to show the link but everyone gets the picture, the site is otcbulletinboard . net and the friends page can be found there.

Right now It has no links but if it gets them can a page like this hurt a site?
I'm guessing it probably won't help to much, more worried about the hurt?

Thanks for any ideas.

It certainly won't hurt if done on a moderate scale.

@keithsan A general rule of thumb is that websites that link back and forth to each other is completely normal online. As with anything SEO, just don't go overboard with this one strategy.

Also Phillip, my email list members are patiently awaiting your responses to the questions I sent.

We do have link directory page on our site where others can leave their links with little introduction about their site but since our site is offering so many other link building opportunities than it rarely gets used. But as with regular website I think it wont hurt at all to have a page like that.

This is not so harmless method of link exchange unless done moderately considering the relevancy of the websites you get links from.

This type of linking will give you positive benefits with ranking.

Wow, didn't expect so many positive responses. I've been running another site for years and don't have one of these pages as I've heard link exchanging was basically worthless. Maybe I'll add one to that site as well.

      Thanks for all the responses.

There is little or no value. It can get out of hand quickly.

I myself would not do it, unless the "friends" were my own sites.
        Gee, there's a tip!

Keep the list very short, make them nofollow if they are just random
links from people who you are "friending." If the ones who exchange
links know better, they'll make your link nofollow as well. Then what
good is it? Your blog has no reason at the moment for a person to
visit, let alone look at some friends.

Link exchanging is very 1997ish and has dramatically fallen out of
        fashion.

You've let the blog sit and have nothing. Why not put your effort into
some useful content, instead of a very low level link exchange?

There are 99 other things you should be doing other than a friends page.

I would make a friends page no worries.

Just don't go crazy with a giant page of links!
