My Site Seems To Be Slipping The Wrong Way In Google?

I've recently built a website where the main focus is on having a single page rank for a keyword.
I think all my on page seo is fine & I've started building back links.
The problem is though, I was on page 9 of Google search results then the next day I was on page 10 now today my site's nowhere to be seen.
I worked my way from page 45 to 1 in Google in search of my site but my sites nowhere to be seen.
Is this kind of thing normal?
How long dose it usually take for a new site to work its way up the search results?
Note: I've not been going crazy with the back links, just 3 to 5 per day for the last few days. I'm also still indexed.
