Also, if I write an article in article directory like Articlesbase, and put the same on my website, do I get penalised for it? Does my website lose out since I'm not going to put it up on there till later?

Does it make to post it on an artcle directly, if the same article is going on my website anyway?
I don't want it to be dis-regarded as duplicate when on my website.

    I shouldn't, but I will...

There's duplicate content, and then duplicate content.

Your example of dupe content is common, safe, and is nothing to worry about.

Duplicate content meant to schmooze search engines is what you worry about.
Virtually every site uses duplicate content in one form or another.

Multiple articles on multiple sites is not a problem. Think logical. Article websites would
not exist if this were a problem. In fact, someone could take your article off of these
    websites and outrank you!

But my advice would be to submit a bare-bones article. Publish the good stuff on your
own site. That has nothing to do with duplicate content, however. Just makes your site
    more "valuable."

Hi Paul, thanks a lot. What do you mean by 'Duplicate content meant to schmooze search engines'?

In reality, you don't get penalized, but google will only show one result for that content. If your blog ranks lower than article directory, it won't be in search results.

This isn't true! If the duplicate content is in a niche with low competition, and the duplicate content is housed on different domains then it isn't uncommon to see the different sites with duplicate content all rank.

No you won't get penalised as the others have said and as Paulgl mentioned - it would be a good idea to publish a variant of the article on your own website, possibly reformatting the structure a bit and adding some additional content.

Lots of directories (incl. Yell.com) have vast amounts of duplicate content provided by The Local Data company, which provides outsourced generic company data to help populate categories that would otherwise be empty.

Duplicate subdomains etc is where you have to be careful.

The duplicate content penalty is just about a myth - 99.9% of the time it does not exist.

The .1% of the time, is when a site is composed of 100% duplicate content. I have seen a couple of sites that were using RSS feeds from big news sources to publish content on their site - they were de-listed and banned from google.

So when you ask about duplicate content, how much are you talking about? 100% of your site, 75% of your site, 50% of your site,,,,,, 3% of your site?

As long as you have some original content on your site - dont worry about it.

Like what ~kev~ have said, duplicate content penalty is just a myth. If you posted an article in your blog, and this article is the same article you submitted to the directory sites, don't worry because it won't get you into troubles. The only problem here is if you're expecting 2 inbound links. No, you won't get 2 inbound links here. Google will only count it as 1.

The best site with the most backlinks will always rise to the top, even if it has duplicate content. Original content is always best, though.

      Thanks a lot guys.

Alright will start with syndication then ;-)

But should I put the articles on my website first for a while, before putting the articles directories?

I like Paul's too of putting most important on my website. But should the website one be the only copy for those important articles?

Yes Paul, it would be nice if you publish the content on your website first and then syndicate it. As it would first cached first on your website and then other places and the you would be safe from any allegation

If im submitting an article to an article directory, i just spin it and then put the spun one on my site.
If you created the best article ever and someone copied it (which happens alllll the time)
and put it on their site would it be fair for google to penalize you for that?

      Hey Rich77sm,

Chers. What do you mean you just 'spin it'?

Do you mean you change the article slightly?

What about the title? do you change that at all?

Are you saying you wouldn't put the exact same article with same wording etc, on your website if you have already put it in an article directory?

We'll I think one must avoid the content duplicity as much as possible. Even if you are writing about the same topic, write it differently in your own words. Genuine content has the more chance that more visitors may read your article or post.... So I recommend write original content of you own.

Google recognizes that most duplicate content is not created to be deceptive. There are of course exceptions, which are considered spam. Grothaus says even spam sites aren't being penalized for having duplicate content though. They're being penalized for being spam. Just like some spammers use bold tags, he says. They don't penalize people just for using them. And they don't penalize people just for having duplicate content.

I thought that duplicate content penalty was invoked when you have duplicate content on the same domain. Is that correct?

I don't agree with duplicate content penalty. There are many website who use duplicate content right on their websites and have never been penalize. How do you define duplicate content. suppose there is a product in the market and 2 ecommerce shops have kept it on their store, won't they keep the same information as the product detail.

In case of article or content syndication if an article is at 2 or more diff. place with same autor bio or backlinks the it should not be considered as dupe content. But yes on the same hand if same content has different back links and diff author bio then it is content theft and should be called duplicate content.

In a simple word what punishment you will get when you steal some body money by authority of law. Same way you are punished from google for duplicate content.

You won't penalized for duplicate content. If you post same article on ezine and your site,Ezine article will appear first for those keywords in search results.Because ezine is authority site, google give importance to ezine. If you really want to post the same content in your site and ezine, first post to your site, post to ezine after it is indexed by google. It may give some good results.

no such thing as the duplicate content penalty; another myth perpetuated by marketers out to squeeze YET more bucks out of marketers is spinning content!! what an absolute waste of time, can tell you now - that is much worse. The idea that content may one day never be original again as its all spun from one lazy spider is even more frightening!! too many bad quality writers and spammers are milking it for all its worth. Its simply a ranking game when you host duplicate content; if your site has the original submission and a higher rank than the other sites hosting it, expect a top 10 result...

I'm glad to see this thread is full of the correct information. Duplicate content doesn't exist in your first example.

And yes, put the article on your website first, then syndicate it out.

But the information you're getting in this thread is acurate
