Low searched keyword, but # 1-4 positions are high powered domains? Skuuurd?

So, I thought I would get into SEO and possibly look into capitalizing on smaller searched keys. For example, a keyword im looking at gets like 2,500 USA searched monthly. It isnt much, but like the top 1-2-3 positions are covered by Bing, MSN, or other massive corporations.

Does this mean regardless of how much i work, I wont exceed position 4? Or did Google just give those positions to those domains because they had slight keyword relevance and no one else was trying to bang out those keys?

Just a thought, but im new - thanks

    Definitely not. Usually these are the type of competition i would try to rank against although 2500 searches monthly seems a tad too low for some serious income.

    Some people determine competition by searching for keyword with " " in google and looking at the number. I found it easier however to use a traffic tool and determine how the top 10 sites for your keyword are optimized for that keyword.

    These big corporations usually have gazillions of backlinks but they are not really optimized for that keyword, and i've found it is pretty easy to outrank them in that case.
