SEO for Local Search Results

I am currently working with some local companies that do not sell online and only use their website to increase their foot traffic in their one location.
Will link building be a good strategy for these companies? or will it be wasted trying to rank nationally? I understand the importance of link building but I am not sure how it will affect a local company.

If they are not ranking #1 for their chosen keywords, build backlinks. Local or national does not matter. Just make sure that the PC you are doing the checking from is "local" to their area since Google can personalize the search results.

Like the other poster mentioned, if they have a legit address and phone number (and it sounds like they do) optimize the heck out of their Google Place page.

Link building somehow can help that company. Apply local SEO strategies for that matter.

If you optimize the site on page factors well for the geographic locale your client's business is in, that should help a lot. Eg: Keyword phrase will be location + service or location + Product etc

Make sure you have the street address of the client's business on the Contact page. Put a map for the local weather. Highlight any upcoming local events in that place. These all strengthen the location of the business to Google.

Also, submit to your location's local directories under the right category.

As mentioned above, use Google Places to get a great local listing for the business.

Create a optimized Google Places listing for your client. Build a ton of citations to the listing and do link building to the main site. Works like a charm!

Google places will help them in Google maps for sure.

Also, start adding them to services like Yelp.com and other social sites that target based on location. Getting positive reviews will be helpful to...
