There are studies on this forum regarding EMD's. Yes they can help, depends on the name and search string. However, this should not be your only way to try and get top rankings. You will need to link build too.

You will always need to build links. Somebody with a random word as their domain can easily dominate your targeted keyword if they build quality backlinks.

Yes, it helps. But that's not the most required to get high rankings. You want to make a rich content and more powerful backlinks to have a steady amount of visitors from search engine.

There are too many factors to name them all here apart from choosing targeted keywords within a domain name + the factors we are not even aware! I see many domains without target keywords in them with higher ranking than one with keywords.

I think SEO and especially more quality backlinks would make the difference here, but of course choosing domain names with target keywords in them seems to be a wiser choice as of this writing.

Mostly, you´ll only get exact domain names for 2-4 word domains,
which have low search volume and naturally also less competition.

You won´t need to many backlinks in this case, but if the keyword
you´re chasing has mature competition, it will be hard and near impossible
    to rank without backlinks.

    Exact Domain Helps SEO?
Yes. It really helps. I always get my exact domains rank top with comparatively very less SEO efforts.

This is a INCREDIBLE help if you are in a local niche (I can get sites ranked in 24-48 Page 1 Google with the proper keywords in the domain) but for a non-local niche yes you will DEF need some backlinking and on-page SEO work. Having keywords in the domain will put you far ahead of the competition though
