What is the fastest way to learn/understand how SEO works?

    The fastest way would be to read about it: Search engine optimization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Essentially you build backlinks, use meta tags, and rich keyword content to help improve your rankings in the search engines. You wait for search engines to crawl your content, backlinks, etc and gradually start advancing in rankings.

    Do Keyword research
    To start with try to identify relatively high demand low competition keywords- low hanging fruit
    Choosing a keyword rich domain name sometimes helps

    Optimise your web pages for the search engines (SEO) involves

    Writing content for humans with search engines in mind
    Building backlinks

    Basically that's it although there are a lot of ways to do it.

    A good insight is to look at Market Samurai keyword research software and the many Video tutorials you'll find if you search. also try the 30 Day Challenge by Ed Dale. It's free-
