I'm in the middle of a stint of article submitting, and have been exploring the next avenue of backlink building for my two sites. All of the SEO companies are promoting social media profile backlink building and some even offering complex link wheels featuring web 2.0 property backlinks.

After reading around a bit on the subject, I keep seeing people saying that most of the links in social media are now no-follow, so dont even bother

so which is it? are links from social sites still worth working on? Being a newbie on the subject - I am sure that I must be missing something here.

Yes they are. But do yourself as favour and be active in the social media profiles. that will benefit you more long term.

Why not just look with your eyes? Put a link on a social media site and see if its nofollowed. Easy.

I do lots of SEO and using social media sites DO work. If you build links using ONLY nofollow links you still get an improvement in ranking!!! I have tested it.
Current thinking seems to be that google looks for a variety of links, and you wouldn't expect a site to only get nice lovely links from only do follow links would you. So they take it in to account in some way.
If you can afford it get a subscription to SENUKE which saves loads of time. Took me a hile to learn to use it though.
