Wordpress Duplicate Content Query

Hey,

When I add new posts to my wordpress site, it also creates pages for them. I got like 4 posts on mainpage and they are all clickable and when you click them it goes to individual pages with that content.

Example: domain.com is our homepage and let's say it has 2 posts: weight loss secrets and weight loss products. What wordpress also does is create pages which look like domain.com/weight-loss-secrets and domain.com/weight-loss-products. And when you go to google and type site:domain.com, you see that you get those pages as results in addition to the homepage.

My question is: Doesn't this cause duplicate content ? same text appears both on homepage and in other page(s).

How do you guys deal with this?

No this will not cause duplicate content because there should only be a snippet of your blog post on your homepage and you should limit it to showing at most 10 posts that way they are cycled through and pushed off the homepage. So in the spiders eye the homepage is always changing and is a bunch of summaries of your blog posts

No duplicate content issues to worry about here

If it's the same content on different URLs on your site then it would qualify as duplicate content, but Google isn't nearly as heavy handed with their penalties as people like to make it seem.

Is your duplicate content deceptive in nature? I wouldn't say so, and I don't think Google would think so either. Here's what they have to say about it:

"In the rare cases in which Google perceives that duplicate content may be shown with intent to manipulate our rankings and deceive our users, we'll also make appropriate adjustments in the indexing and ranking of the sites involved."

Thanks for the replies folks, I was really worried there.

Guess wordpress creating a page for each post you make is a standard thing ? Is there a way to disable that ?

One thing you can do is make your home page static. What happens naturally is that your home page is constantly changing because you keep posting new posts which replace the old ones. Because your home page is changing, your rank in the SERPs can end up fluctuating. You can make any of your pages a static home page from the Dashboard>Settings>Reading. This way you will only have one page for each post.

Aside from all that, there is no such thing as a duplicate content 'penalty'.

Exactly! You will not be penalized, but you will not benefit as those who have the original content will be at the top of the serps

Finally - someone speaking some truth. :p

And Frake - don't worry about it bud. Google KNOW Wordpress and they don't penalize you for simply using a Wordpress platform. HOWEVER, I do use the Duplicate Content Cure plugin if I'm worried about a dup issue.
