Goodle Adwords - Exact vs Broad for "what is time" string

Hi Folks,

Wonder if somebody can help me to understand how the "what is time" string gives 226 million searches with 'broad' parameter, and 9900 searches with 'exact' parameter, as shown in attached. Why the large discrepancy?

Also, the 'Competition' field is virtually empty on Google Adwords. Would this mean its a good keyword. 2 things that come to mind for monetization are: books and courses on time management, and books on time, as in Physics and Stephen Hawkins, etc.

Thanks...

There is a big discrepancy because with exact search someone is searching for exactly "what is time"...I can't think of too many reasons why people would search for that term.

However, with broad search it could be people searching..."what time is it in New York", "what time is the Packers game" and on and on.

There is little competition because there isn't many reasons for anyone to be advertising on that keyword because their ad would show up for so many unrelated searches.

      Thanks for your reply.

If I assume when someone searches for the exact phrase "what is time", they are actually thinking in terms on physics, astronomy, the nature of time itself, then could a monetization option be having 10-15 articles discussing time in that context, plus reviews of books and affiliate links to amazon.com on that topic?

Also perhaps affiliate links to ebay for Einstein posters, "time travel" toys, some links to other retailers? Maybe some "time" jokes. A bit serious, a bit fun, a bit of physics, and some affiliate stuff.

Does that sound like something that can work, or will i be wasting 1 week of my time? Thanks...

In my personal opinion, I would not go after this keyword as it is too broad. But if you think it would work, then go for it.

Thanks, I was thinking along the lines that the more broad a keyword is, the more 'un-niche' the website has to be, which has its good and bad point i guess.

"what is time" is not a good keyword to use on adwords that is why you don't have any competition. This keyword is to broad to get good conversions. You want to buy keywords that match your products exactly. Good keywords would be "books and courses on time management" , "books on time management", "courses on time management"," Physics and Stephen Hawkin books" etc. All different variation of these keywords and add words like "buy, learn, tips, problems with, etc." as prefix and suffix for your keywords.

Thanks for that, makes sense. But if I am not looking to buy the keywords, but only using the adwords tool to see how many searches google gets for that phrase, it 10k searches a month a good amount to start an affiliate website with?

At best, that is still an estimate (but a good one, IMO). Thing is, you never really "know" with 100% certainty as the adwords tool is just a guideline. I'd say give it a shot. Your idea sounds sort of fun and I think if you make it an interesting site it could do well for you. You can also generate a list by signing people up for a "Physics joke of the day" (or something similar!) and test it. Put your opt-in in a popup or the sidebar. The list helps in the future, and you can also make PPC and CPA/amazon sales as well (as you stated already). 10K exact is okay to start with and should be a good way to spend a week. Good luck

Thanks, it is definitely on my to-try list of ideas.
