each of those has a meaning and a reason.

If you are looking for organic traffic .com, .net or, .org. .us sucks to get good indexing.
.org is for public interest. .net is cause you cant get what you want in .com

I would start with .com domain (high traffic potential) but in most cases are already taken, so if wouldn't be available i would choose .net.

always .com if you can. the only time I'd get a .net or .org is if I found a great exact match domain or something like that

Ok because I thought .com was just for selling things.

What is it you are after? Selling things or telling people about things? Being in here with a commercial dot com URL in your sig suggests that you are aware of the differences?

From what I have read it doesnt matter to the spiders squat what you choose as long as its just a single extension and hosted in your country that you are selling in (preferable). People buy dot com because its the easiest for people to remember and gives legitimacy.

I would get .com first. People remember that better.
It's also a good idea sometimes to get the . net version as well.

This all depends on your purpose. To help you out, here are the definitions of the most commonly used extensions.

".com" - this is short for "commercial." Most businesses use this domain name because it is an unrestricted global domain name extension. Meaning, people all over the world can find your website. Since this extension is widely used by online businesses and is usually the first domain name extension choice, if you plan to use ".com", you need to act quickly because the number of available domain names is decreasing.

".net" - this is short for the word "network." This is another unrestricted global domain name. This is usually used by businesses involved in the Internet such as internet service providers and web hosting companies.

".org" - this represents the word "organization." Again, this is an unrestricted global domain name extension and is commonly used by non-commercial websites. However, you can still find a lot of commercial businesses registering this extension along with .com domain names to simply protect their brands.

".biz" - This extension is the latest type of domain. This is a restricted-use global domain name extension intended for business websites. This enhances the company's presence on the Internet world with a domain name that shouts out "business".

".info" - This is one of the extensions that are gaining in popularity in the online world. It is an unrestricted domain extension that helps businesses to reach their target audience by providing information about your business as well as sharing your ideas.

".uk", ".us", ".in", ".au" - These are specific domain name extensions that states your geographic location. These are restricted-use country codes that businesses or individuals can use. For example, ".uk" is a domain extension for businesses or individuals in United Kingdom. ".au" for those in Australia. ".in" for individuals or organizations in India. ".us" for those in the United States.

Hope I was able to help you. Good Luck!

      All the best,
      Nick

I would stick to the 3 major ones: .com, .net, & .org for more effective google ranking.

Well most people will hear a site and automatically put .com For example if yo heard a website on the radio or tv, and didn't get to access it for sometime because you were busy, you might forget if it was .org or .net etc... Most people will try .com. Just something to think about.

I'm a newbie in IM. What about subdomains? Do you recommend using subdomains for example weightloss.subdomain.com, makemoneyonline.subdomain.com? Does it matter to search engines? Appreciate your advice.
