SEO effected by words in domain name?

Will my rankings be effected by adding an additional word aside from my primary keyphrase to a domain name.

For Example: If my primary keyphrase is "motorcycle repair Chicago," but that EMD is taken for all of the top level domains could I grab something like bestmotorcyclerepairchicago.com or mymotorcyclerepairchicago.com and still be ok?

I really didn't know how to phrase the question in Google (I tried).

Any thoughts?

This is exactly what you should do. try.org, .net before. if not available, add the words as you suggested. However, i would prefer adding the extra word at the end

I don't think adding words will have that large an effect personally. Mainly because there are so many other things you can do to compensate for a low rank.

I also have a serious issue with generic & descriptional keyword domains. Names like you wrote "bestmotorcyclerepairchicago".

First, the name is really a bit too long.
Second, it has no brand value at all. Like when bikers are talking to each other in the bar I don't see anyone saying "hey man you NEED to go to 'bestmotorcyclerepairchicago.com to get your bike fixed".

I just like to have a name that people will actually feel good recommending. Something that sounds more like a business than a website. Like "quality1stbikerepair.com" or "marvelousmotorcycles.com".

Thats just how I prefer to work. Although I know plenty of people who are obsessed about getting keywords in the domain. I just don't think its as important as having a strong brand name. You can obsess over every other aspect of your SEO and have a strong ranking site ALONG WITH a strong brand name.

    Thats just me.

Good luck either way - Red

Adding the word "best" to some domains taken looks very well and doesn't affect SEO, but "my" I don't like it very much

If "best" would be good or bad option in adding it depends of the domain

A few month ago I was wanting a domain and was taken, then I opt for adding "best" and results better than the original (for my purposes)

I think EMD's are really overrated. I mean I've seen people completely avoid making a site because they couldn't get an EMD. Don't stress over such minor details.

Google has been relying less and less on domain name and focusing more on what the specific page has to rank a website. This is kind of what google panda is aiming to do.

So adding that extra word shouldn't hurt too much, but i don't see why you would get an emd in the first place anyway. I know people will disagree with me, but i don't think their worth it.

Build a brand, not a website.

Yeah, you can put the word "best" in front of it. It still looks good (actually think it's more compelling), the people who come there will still know what they are getting, and your main keywords will still be in the same sequence. Getting ranked for a longer-tail keyword like that will also help to you get ranked for your main keyword as well.

Thanks everyone! It seems pretty clear that I shouldn't stress about the extra word being on there. I just like to have a good base before I start content writing, link building, etc.
