Non-www and www coming up for new domain

I just registered a new domain and set up the nameservers with a new hosting account I setup as well. I don't have Wordpress installed right now (so just the blank index page), but it seems that my domain is up whether I do "http://domain.com" or "http://www.domain.com". Both urls are coming up whether you type one or the other.

Is this normal for new domains to resolve with both the www and non-www version at this stage? I'm planning to install Wordpress on these soon and will choose the protocol "http://www." when doing the install. Once I complete the install will Wordpress then just resolve to the "http://www." version whether you type it with the www or without the www? Is that a feature of Wordpress?

Set the preferred domain within Google's Webmaster Tools.

You might want to also set the same preference within your htaccess file.

When you add a domain to most web hosting accounts, they will automatically create DNS entries for the www and non-www versions of your domain.

You'll also find that you'll have hostnames like

    ftp.yourdomain.com
    webmail.yourdomain.com
    etc

    that are also automatically created.

As for WordPress, whatever URL you set under Settings->General->WordPress Address will be your main URL. WordPress will automatically redirect to the non-www version of your domain or vice-versa, depending on what you specify.

Thanks. That's what I thought would happen when I do a Wordpress install. I will be choosing the "http://www." protocol option when doing the install of WP and then afterwards if I type in the url with www or non-www it will resolve to the www version correct?

If you set the site to be a non-www, then usually what happens when you go to the www version of it is you get redirected to the non-www one.

Anyways, I don't really think one is better than the other. It's mostly a matter of personal preference.

I personally use the non-www versions.

Make sure to choose one of the two and stick with it forever. Especially in link-building, it's essential that you only use one.
