Need help with understanding navigation summary

I have a confusion with the Navigation Summary report in Google Analytics, could you please help me understanding this.
If the entrance path (Current Selection) is my Homepage how can there be a "previous page path"? (or what does previous page path mean?).
Eg. A visitor landed directly on my Homepage > then to 'Page 2' > then to 'Page 3'
Here I am assuming 'Page 2' and 'Page 3' to fall under the 'Next Page Path', what will be the 'Previous page path' in this scenario?
