Am I Over Optimizing?

I'm wondering if I'm over (or under) optimizing my on-page seo. I don't want to get hit by Panda, or whatever furry creature Google decides to roll out next.

Basically what I'm doing....
  • I do NOT use an EMD. I use a generic domain that covers the niche.
  • I do use Yoast SEO. I have it set up as Seen Here for those interested. Basically it's set to avoid duplicate indexing by Google and to give me the most SEO power it can.
  • I have my keyword as my category (site.com/keyword/)
  • I always use my keyword in my title (site.com/keyword/keyword)
  • I put my keyword in my meta data for that page.
  • The site is new, about two weeks old, in case you wanted to know.
  • Importantly, I'm building content on four different keywords at once. My site is not full of one specific keyword.

And here's what an average post on Yoast's Page Analysis tells me... my notes are in the [brackets].

The images on this page are missing alt tags.
[I never add alt tags or any keywords to my images.]

No outbound links appear in this page, consider adding some as appropriate.
[I have a blogroll of authority sites in the niche in my footer.]

The page title contains keyword / phrase, but it does not appear at the beginning; try and move it to the beginning.
[Not sure about this one. I always put my keyword in the first 20-40 words, usually in the first 5, but I get this every time.]

The keyword / phrase appears in the URL for this page.
[Twice even, one for category, one for title.]

Keyword / keyphrase appears in 1 (out of 3) subheadings in the copy. While not a major ranking factor, this is beneficial.
[I always put my keyword in at least one h2-h4 tag. Sometimes twice, but that's rare.]

The copy scores 72.4 in the Flesch Reading Ease test, which is considered easy to read.
[My average score, pretty much.]

The keyword density is 1.56%, which is great, the keyword was found 6 times.
[I try to maintain around 1.5% - 1.7%. I do not go below 1% and I do not exceed 2%]

In the specified meta description, consider: How does it compare to the competition? Could it be made more appealing?
[My meta data is almost always an excerpt from the page that makes sense, makes readers interested, and always includes my keyword.]

The meta description contains the primary keyword / phrase.
[Yep, always. Sometimes twice.]

There are 586 words contained in the body copy, this is greater than the 300 word recommended minimum.
[I tend to write posts between 500 and 1,000 words on average. I'm always between 300 and 1,200.]

The page title is more than 40 characters and less than the recommended 70 character limit.
[Most of my titles are like: The Basics of keyword, or Commonly Asked Keyword Questions, or Simple Keyword Tips, etc etc etc.]

The keyword appears in the first paragraph of the copy.
[I always add the keyword to my first paragraph, usually twice if it makes sense.]

Well there you have it. Some good info for those who want to know some specifics about on-page seo and also my question in detail. Am I over optimizing? Does Yoast SEO over optimize in general? Am I going to be hit with a penalty if I don't change some things? If you need more info I'll do my best to provide it without giving away my niche/keywords/site.

    Your over optimizing....

Seriously mate. Just create a page naturally like a brand new web master would.

They are usually ugly but filled with good content that the person has hand written.

Natural doesn't worry about density or where the keywords or placed or any of that.

So your advice is to make the most unseoed noob content one could possibly make and just hope you get lucky and did something that Google likes? No thanks.

Not at all. But on-page factors are not what Google is looking at first anymore.

And pages that are TOO optimized are very easy for Google to spot as a site that has had SEO done.

Look at big sites like amazon.

Not a whole lot of SEO on page done, yet they kill.

Funny, I reckon you are over under-optimising, you are trying so hard not to look like you are optimising that you are creating an unnatural looking page for users and the search engines. Just do what you think is best for the user in each of the above situations and you will be fine.

What would you say makes it look unnatural to you? I know you can't actually see it, sadly, but you seem pretty sure it's strange looking? What stands out?

I would have to say my pages look just like any other blog post, sure looks better than most of the crap out there. I asked a friend here who does not know it's my site what they think, they say it looks good.

You have to remember 90% of what Yoast is analyzing in the page analysis is not even seen by the user. The copy reads well, it has relevant images, and the h2 tags make sense. I'm not sure what looks unnatural. I'm lost.

  • Blueoak,

I would say that your page is optimized just fine. Leave it alone and keep adding fresh content to your website. Develop a content calendar and add fresh content on at least a weekly basis and optimize it in the same way you have here.

Check out this post on SEOMoz. It will help you steer clear of over optimization,

Never rely on automated analysis reports. They are 50% fake, all absurd and obviously wrong information. Focus on good content, directory submissions, social media involvement in the active phase, press release with reason, and distribition of PR into PR directories. Don't rent out your website to any link building firms, you have great chances being caught.

  • Hi BlueOak,

    I don't think you are over-optimizing.

On the contrary, like someone else mentioned, I think you are safely underoptimized considering the things that you have been missing as shown from the Yoast analysis.

More about over-optimization, I think this article by Yoast is a good read:

    Over-Optimization vs Optimization

    A quote from the article:

So, Google wants to do something about over-optimization. That's not saying they want to do something about SEO. As Matt said on that same panel one more time, they have nothing against SEO, they have something against spamming.

So, if you write texts with a keyword density of 25%, you maybe should be worried. If you install an SEO plugin that helps you write more search engine friendly content (and even warns you when it thinks the keyword density is too high) and optimizes most of the technicalities for you, there's nothing to worry about.
So, as long as you don't go overboard, I wouldn't worry.

You can still take care of doing the basic stuff, like putting alt-tags with your keyword, and including your keyword in the first sentence, etc.

Honestly I'm scared of alt tags at the moment, at least when put on top of everything else. During the latest EMD crisis a few weeks ago I saw a significant difference in those pages with keyword alt tags; they were being hit the hardest it seemed.

Most sites that were hit had a small list of things in common, alt tags being one of them.

there is a point when you need to put the microscope down. if you focus on who is reading the page you should be ok. You shoudl care about what you are doing with the content and the who SEO thing...but dont obsess over it because it will come across

I think you worry too much. Its ok not to follow everything that Yoast tells you to do. Like putting the keyword in the beginning of your post title. If you don't want to put alt tags in your images, at least put a keyword in your image's file name (only if file names appear in your uploaded image's link).

I believe it is not just how you structure page but what the content is. If I target a keyword then I try to include at least 3 other articles that are not based on keywords. If every page targets a keyword then it might be spammy.

It seems that you're doing most things correct. The first thing that jumped out at me was the alt tags.
