How to rank for local search terms?

As the title said, I wonder how could I rank for local search term. For example, the keyword "Online Music" is very broad and is very competitive on the global.
But, if I want to rank this keyword for my local country, how have I need to be done to achieve this?
Or, I only could add something like "-myareaname- online music"?

    Its not that difficult but it really depends on the competition. I suggest you the following things:

    1) Add your site to local business directories
    2) List your business in Google Maps.
    3) Use your geographic location in the Title.
    4) Ask your people to write reviews about products/ services.
    5) Add printable coupons to your listing.

    Try city + keyword for starters. or Keyword in city.

    Use Google suggest to see exactly what people are searching for. 25% of all Google searches are new every day so it's a great insight.

    Now that you have a keyword, you need to build some high PR backlinks manually. Forget automated services. They are useless junk that hasn't worked since 2011.

    Both the other members give some great advice. You could also try purchasing a country specific TLD if you haven't done so already and another strategy is to implement som local semantic search markup.

    Aslo, EMD in the extension according to location would help a lot, EMD is still powerful, those sites were penalized which were of low quality.. for off-page works, you can use local sites, blogs, forums, directories, social networking etc.. it should work.
