YouTube SERPs vs Google SERPs

Hey WF,

I'm doing really well with ranking YouTube videos however I have noticed something a bit peculiar.

I have a video ranked #3 on Google but only #11 on YouTube. The video ranked #1 in YouTube SERPs isn't anything special. A few backlinks and about 2K views.

I understand there are specific metrics with YouTube videos like Thumbs Up, Likes etc but if my video is super relevant in Google SERPs it should be reflected in YouTube right? I don't understand the extremes.

What are your thoughts?

Sanj.

I should also add that my competitor ranked #1 in YouTube is ranked on page #4 of Google.

Forget about "google.com." The vast majority of video searchers,
do so from youtube, or using the youtube search on google.com.

Logically speaking, nobody searching on google.com web search
really wants a video. That's why they are shown sparingly, unless
the search just cries out for it. I would also imagine that those
videos' position is not set in stone.

Don't build backlinks to youtube. They are really backlinks to
just that. Youtube. The page they are on is created dynamically,
and is not really a webpage in the true sense of the word.

Build links to your youtube channel. Now that is a backlink.

Embed the video, SEO that page, and build links to it.

This is bad advice. If you are a newbie. I urge you to disregard it.

Most SERPs have a slot of two saved for YouTube videos. Ranking a video for these slots is very easy.

Why would Google do this you ask? To keep you on Google properties longer so you are more likely to click an advertisement.

YouTube videos respond very very well to building backlinks DIRECTLY to them. Since YouTube is an authority website, you can blast the crap out of your video. Go crazy. SPAM words well.

Video views, likes, and comments also seem to help for ranking within YouTube. For Google SERPS with no YouTube videos, there is a good chance you can rank with just views alone and high onpage KW optimization.

I have ranked for many medium competition keywords using YouTube video and tons of SPAM.

And you are wrong about people who do searches in Google not looking for video results. I see exceptionally high CTRs for some of my YouTube videos, because of the video image they are given in the SERPs.

For me it is the exact opposite, I don't care much about YouTube searchers. I care about Google searches.

There's a huge percentage of web pages on the net that are dynamic pages, which doesn't really matter, most CMS are dynamic & only include a handful of template files pulling data from a database (ex: WP/mysql). This very forum is built on dynamic pages, still not a problem. What matters is URLs, once Google finds a URL, it needs to consistently find the same URL otherwise all backlinks would be pointing to a 404. Most Youtube video pages have a Google cache & Google knows about the links pointing to those pages. Even a simple PDF will have a Google cache (still a web page), again what matters is the URL doesn't change.

IMO, I would rather rank my own page/video in Google SERPs, otherwise your forcing traffic to take an extra step towards a conversion If the traffic has to visit Youtube first. If your running Adsense on the Youtube video, that's different.

The thing is you need to increase activity on your video channel, you should create more videos, it should help.

Not necessarily. At least, when it comes to ranking in Google itself. Google tends to show the videos that are most optimized for the keywords. (Title, description, video filename, tags, etc.)

I've never really found that anything else matters much. (View, comments, favorites, etc.)

Yep, I definitely agree. Most of my videos end up on page #1 within 48 hours with zero backlinks. It's the YouTube SERPs that are harder to crack.
