Does anyone have concrete numbers for article length in terms of word count for blogs? Is there a minimum word account that should be written in order to be picked up by the search engines? 300 is what I have read, I believe but wanted to double check with others.

The length of an article doesn't matter unless your targeting something like Google In-depth articles.

...or your trying to pick up a bunch of longtail traffic, but I can do the same or better with that single amount of text spread out over multiple internal pages (relevant internal pages + focused internal links).

Also, as soon as the guys mentioning keyword density show up (and they will), ignore them.

It all depends on what key words you are targetting really, and what the competition is like on those keywords.

If you're just blogging and not really targetting any keywords, hoping to grow and get picked up for lots of long tail stuff then it shouldn't really matter.

It does make a difference for me when building micro niche sites. I think if my pages have 700+ words they would do better than if they only had 3-500 words.

There is no standard set of rules about the length but enough contents can be good that you can set the scene and bring the tale to a conclusion as too lengthy or too short contents can distract the readers interest.

Just try to make sure that your keyword density is not more than 2%, based on your article's number of words. For me, I would go for a minimum of 500 words, but it's much better if it's around 900 to 1,000 words.

Write about a subject that you are familiar with, or find a writer familiar with that subject. As long as someone familiar with the material is writing, the keyword density (to any degree that it matters) will be natural, and you will get more natural variations of the keyword than you would if you searched for them in a software program.

As for length, write either until (1) the income cannot justify more material, for content requires either time to produce of money to purchase or (2) you have no more to say. If your piece turns out to be 250 words long, post it. If it's 2,5000 words long, either post it and include more ads, or go with Yukon's philosophy and break it up into several posts.

    Hi There,

For blog the content should be of 300 plus words, the minimum words should be 300 which is as per Search Engine Norms and for article the minimum words should be 400, it should not be less then 400. As we all know that content plays major role in promotion of any website so blog and article should be of these minimum words. And off course the keyword density should be between 2-3 percent.

Doesn't matter. Type in J Brand (top fashion brand gets a lot of visitors). You'll see number 2 shopbop.com all ecommerce. No content whatsoever.

  • China,

I don’t think you will find a hard and fast rule on this one. Yes it is true that pages with thin content will not rank very well however that doesn’t mean thousands of words of useless fluff will rank better. I think as long as you try not to go below 400 words you should be fine but I would focus more on making a useful post as opposed to how long it is.

For example take this post from Search Engine land on Cutt’s most recent video on duplicate content.

Google's Matt Cutts: Duplicate Content Won't Hurt You, Unless It Is Spammy

The article is 169 words with an image and a video. You might think that’s too thin yet not only was it shared almost 1,000 times, it ranks very well after only being up for a day. That’s probably an extreme example but it shows that an authoritative and quality source ranks well regardless of the length of the content.
    Best,

sigh.....To me the focus is all wrong. Forget about word counts and cover the subject. Be engaging and informative. This word count nonsense just leads to awful padded content you get from $2 writers and seriously if you are only thinking the minimum word count you are building an awful crappy website thats going to get torched in some algo update anyway.
