Site Homepage missing in SERPS

I have a website that was ranking well before October 2013. It was within the top 10 but after October 4th, its home page disappeared from the SERPS and its internal page is currently ranking at position 160. This is the same with many more websites from my friends. What do you think was the main cause of this and how can i get the ranking back? Do you think this was a result of the Humming Bird update?

I had a similar issue with a client website last year (still haven't pinpointed the cause as we did not engage in linkbuilding or bad SEO practices). Well, our home page showed for everything and the internal pages were 30+ pages in SERPS, even when there was no competition for the same super obscure keyword.

We ended up putting the website into a new CMS and changing the entire url structure (which admittedly needed help), redirecting the old pages to the new ones. It was a drastic move, but since we weren't getting the traffic we needed before, it was worth the risk. All of the pages are now ranking and our traffic is where it should be. This took only a couple of index periods, too.

Anywho, slightly different situation, but best of luck fixing yours!

This is because of link building tactics you have done before.

Switch to new website and redirect the old one to new website.

This is the only possible way. Google disavow tool (or) removing bad links Not helping in this case.

Lol, dude, Penguin 2.1 was rolled out on Oct. 4th. Get off Warrior Forum, this is the blind leading the blind.

If this was an EMD and you were ranking for the main keyword then this could be due to limited anchor text variation. Try and see if your home page ranks for any other keyword. Build some anchor text variation and see if rankings improve for the main keyword.

True this was an EMD that i bought from Godaddy (3 year old domain). It ranked superfast because just after the launch it ranked in the top 80 without any links. The good thing is that it has fewer links that i had built. Do you think making anchor variations within the already existing links can help?

I have an EMD that ranked on page1 without building any links for 2 years. I was getting sales for the CB product I was promoting without doing anything.

Then all of sudden there were many sites linking to the index page with same keyword and my ranking for the main keyword vanished.

Subsequently I added some backlinks with anchor text variation and my home page started ranking for a much more competitive keyword.

BTW my EMD keyword had 4 words. And now my homepage ranks for a keyword with 3 words.

I suggest check your google webmaster tool, that you get any message form google, if yes, than sort out this issues, also re-optimize the website, adding new content, meta in website. Re-submit the XML sitemap in google webmaster tool.

easypr I haven't got any message from Google and there is no manual action on the site. What is surprising is that an internal page is ranking well.

veekay31 it seems text anchor variation is the main problem for this site. I have tried to edit the existing links already built to make variations. Do you think this can help or Google devalued already these backlinks?

Whether you got affected by Hummingbird Algo update or Penguin Update..Update your site content that provide value to people or check whether there some low quality links or not..Continue to get high quality links from high authority sites..

I've noticed that if the inner pages are doing fine and you homepage disappear from google ranking then you need to build good content on your site and re assess the backlinks of your site.
