Whats More Important for an Aged Domain

Assuming both are relevant.

A: A domain with a larger backlink and refering domain profile tons of relevant pr 0 and some 1's and maybe some 2's.

B: A domain with a small backlink profile and referring domains (ext backlinks <30 and referring domains <15) with something like a pr 6, pr 5, pr 5, pr 4, pr 4 backlinks.

I can never find both its always one or the other when mining domains. I have heard a small link profile can get diluted easily when re-establishing the site is why I am asking.

The first option - A. PR is irrelevant.

Pisssst...This is an SEO forum where people actually know about SEO, and how things work. If you edit that answer quickly, maybe they won't notice.

Swings and roundabouts, really. Depends on the *real* link value rather than what the toolbar PR says. If, for example, amongst the links to the domain with fewer links there is a power PR5 or PR6 domain linking in from a top related website in the same niche or a greatly trusted government resource or something then it may well give more benefit than A.

On the other side of the coin, a hell of a lot referring domains with lower PR may show diversity but may also be the outcome of a spamming campaign.

You should anyway be checking Mozrank (PA/DA), Majestic Rank (Trust/Citation Flow), Ahrefs and other indicators other than just Google PR for your evaluation if you can.

And nothing beats intuition and experience when it comes to evaluating a potential domain. Did you run the domains through archive.org, for example to see recent / past history. Evidence of spamming and dropping can often be uncovered.

I am using all of those tools. Simply put when mining domains I have yet to find high pr links on a vast backlink profile.

You either get high pr authoritative links on a small backlink profile.

      or

More links that are usually directory spam, or spam in general. The rare case you find lots of links that arent spammed there usually low pr.

I think link diversity is better. But you need to do your research first. Its no good finding a website with thousands of links if they are all spam. I always try to find as many different linking root domains as possible.
Its pointless finding a site with one PR6 link, to find out after you have built a site, the link has been removed.

Backlinks will always rise and drop. Trying to find a balance of enough quality links that will help your cause, is the key.

Use all the tools at your disposal opensiteexplorer, majesticseo, ahref, archive.org

It is not a quick process, but with a little practice you learn what to look for and can get a routine whilst searching for domains.

IF, and it's a big if, I think that the links on those high PR pages are likely to stick around then I'd much prefer domain B.

IF, on the other hand, I come to the conclusion that said high PR links are likely to get removed over the course of a few months then the domain has little long term value and thus domain A would be a better option.

    My 2 cents...

I'd almost always opt for option A. Just like when investing in the stock market, diversity is important to reduce risk.

When picking up domains on the drop, I'll look at the profile and if I see a few valuable links, I'll be sure to build a landing page that matches the inbound link. That way if the old link owner clicks, it'll appear real and be more likely to stay alive.

But the bottom line is unless the backlink profiel is amazing for option B, go with A.

And despite some saying PR is dead, it isn't. It's one of our only measures of how important G thinks a site is. DA/PA are very easy to fake, so be careful just assuming that a site is good if it has a good DA number.

You need to be a good driver behind the wheel of a Ferrari.
