SEO Spyglass scary findings

Hello,

I have been using the tool SEO spyglass to spy on my competitors as I was going down in ranking. Anyway I did a search on my absolute biggest competitor and I noticed that the tool listed pages that mentioned me or my website on her analysis. On those pages there were no back links to my competitors site but the tool had still picked up my back linked sites. Why do you think that is? For instance my business Youtube page was in my competitors list of back link pages...

Do they have their link or keyword in anchor on your page?

Have you checked your headers and footers for any suspicious code?

Are you sure you were not checking multiple sites at once?

Gosh do you think they are capable to hack my page?? Shiiit!! I will certainly check...

I did notice that I had some spammy backlinks from porn sites to my website. I think this is the probably the most likely reason that I have dropped in ranking. I have asked google webmaster tools to ignore a whole list of backlinks. I guess they might have tried to backlink my page on bad irrelevant sites to make me drop in ranking... But to hack my site... I really hope not.

Putting extraneous code and injections into a site isn't unheard of, but can lead the person who did it to a lot of trouble. There's a forum owner on another forum that is currently in a lot of trouble with ebay for doing this and getting credit for sales he didn't make.

Thank you for your evidence of the bad links hurting your site. Search engines swear up and down that this doesn't happen, but that's clearly not the case. It might be time to start disavowing the links in GWT and on Yahoo, Bing.

Start simple. Look at the posts on your site for bad outgoing links, look at your backlinks pointing to your site, then look at the code and try to find http:// strings and similar.

Lucky you, some of the best back-links I have are my competitors talking smack about me on their website. -- They are relevant, and they send me customers -- thanks silly competitors !

    Hi,

I have disavowed about 1900 links to my website from non relevant sites. But I have about 3000 more to go. I uploaded the list to GWT but I wonder how long it will take them to disavow these links and if I need to upload another batch do I have to include the first 1900 that I first sent?...

My competitors who are ranking on the 1 page of google have maximum 800 links to their sites BUT all links are from relevant content sites ie. sites with similar subjects to theirs. Most from sites with no page rank but some from sites with PR 3 tops. (apart from facebook and YouTube links of course) I have about 1000 links from sites with PR 6-9 but those are sites with non relevant content to my content. I have dropped to page 7 of Google from being at page 2... My competitors who also were on page 2 are now on page 1. It's driving me crazy as I have been working with SEO since 2008 and I am sure they have no clue about SEO. (They have hired help or they are just doing what google want them to do... keeping to their subject...)

    So the question is...

Shall I disavow all links that are from sites that have no subject connection (ie. if my site was about weight loss I would disavow all links that weren't coming from sites regarding weight loss) to my site? (including .gov and .edu sites?) Which means my sites Page Rank will go down...
And I would only keep links that were coming from other weigh loss sites like my competitors have done?

Or shall I keep some of the .edu and .gov and some of the high PR sites backlinks even if they are not relevant to my content?

I mean I am on page 7 now so there isn't much to be lost by just deleting it all and starting over...

This thing is really ruining me so I have to do something drastic...

    Thankful for help!
