New to SEO and backlinks

Hello!
I'm fairly new to SEO. For some months now I've been working with a website I own. The website isn't new but it was kind of abandon for some time. Anyway I start learning a little about basic SEO until I feel comfortable enough to start using tools SeNuke, GSA along with other tools and manual work.
Gladly that did help me to start ranking my website better. Until I got to the first page of Google in my country, for a keyword with a fair amount of competition. That was nice and all but I wanted to go to the Top, because actually my sales were increasing steadily ever since I began my noob SEO labor.
However currently it has become really difficult to stay on the first page of Google, since other sites keep on pushing me on to the second page...But the most weird thing to me is that out of 10 (the 2 at the top are actually big companies), 8 of those sites...well they have a handful of backlinks, the one right on top of my website have only 3!! Yes 3!! According to Ahrefs. Even more so it hasn't created any backlinks whatsoever for the last 6 months.
The content...well is pretty much what appears to be and old blog that hasn't been upgraded. Pretty much a white page with a index of subjects on it, a banner at the top, the title which has the keyword...and that's pretty much it.
How could that be??
Why is always on the front page of Google? And why did I need to create a bunch of backlinks and social media signals to move from pretty much the 5th page of google to the first...and now second?
I'm a lose here. What could I be missing here? I mean are backlinks the only tool we have for rank websites ?
Please help me any advice will be greatly appreciated since I'm new to SEO.
