In my experience they tend to rank straight away or not at all. If they rank straight out, it is generally an easier keyword. It will rank in a few hours though, with only a few minutes work.

I agree, I would never encourage this, just leads to junk traffic, produce a quality document and you will find yourself with quality traffic(and a lot of it)

Regardless of the links being unclickable on Docstoc, there is definitely tonnes of traffic available. I can get 10k+ document views quite regularly, and by showing a URL to the user which is short...
