Yes you do need to have your own apps... however there's lots of open source scripts you can use and few app sample codes from google. You can host it with appspot.com if you don't want...

the idea behind it is simple as the web evolved, websites are no longer just a place for the user to consume content and now users can interact with websites/webapp, with chrome browser and chrome OS...
