Generally speaking, if the higher level keyword you are looking for only has 200 exact searches a month. That's a poor keyword to go after, and potentially a poor niche. Building out 'longtail...

True - Alexa is an extremely poor indicator of traffic.

I have sites that have an Alexa of 500k+ that receive 1,000/uniques a day and I have websites with 50k-80k Alexa that receive 40-50/uniques...

Make sure that its EXACT searches! I'm sure most of us have made that mistake once or twice and built a site around a term that had amazing Global search volume and had very little exact.
