IM through direct messages on Facebook

You cannot post directly to someone's wall unless you're their friend on Facebook, but lets say through BoardReader or something they're wondering about a product /service in your niche...

Would it be illegal to send them a personalized message that includes a link to your article or affiliated product?
This may easily break the affiliate program's rules too since its an unsolicited email, but is 'spam' usually only considered such if it looks automated or in bulk?

I'm guessing it might be too risky to send direct messages to people with an advertisement unless they're on your list, right?

Eventually someone will report your messages as spam and Facebook will disable your account. Try setting up a Facebook page or group instead.

    hey good questions

"spam" is a word that is often misused, I got my big break in bulk email, and just because it's bulk and unsolicited does not mean it's spam.

in fact that's why they call it can-spam because you "can spam" if you follow a few simple rules lol..

with that being said no it's not illegal, nor is it spam because by definition the word "spam" applies legally only to email,

a lot of people use spam in slang fashion like "link spam" or "facebook spam"

although those are spammy, they are not illegal by the definition of spam which only applies to email.

however affiliate programs, networks, and facebook might have a problem with this practice, so it's all on whether or not you're ok with it, and if the network or whatever is OK with it, I can tell you facebook is not, but hey they dont like cloaking either...

Craigslist has a default warning before you post an ad which includes something like this, "Fun fact: Its easy to find out an affiliates ID. You can go to that network and report them, and usually their account will get suspended."

This kind of thing could be a reason why you shouldn't send unsolicited messages...

    M N Warrior - don't do it!

My student did that and Facebook can catch onto you copying and pasting the same messages.

It only takes 1 person to report you for your account to get limited, blocked and eventually banned.

The better approach would be to add them as a friend, introduce yourself as a like minded individual, socialise online and once you are no longer total strangers, recommend your link.

I'll drop a little secret about me here. I met my fiancé through Facebook and it was doing something very similiar to the steps I outlined above.

Its a pretty good point that you can request friendship on there even if you just see them as a customer. For the accounts on FB I set up for niches / affiliate marketing, my real name is not used so there's nothing awkward if they happened to say "who the hell are you."

when it comes to posting the same messages to people over and over again, a way around that would be to spin the messages, have alternative versions of it and some plugin for your web browser or whatever could post a random one by default. alongside that you could add a few personalized notes to it so it doesn't look so automated.

This is a sticky wicket! Take the time to get to know new friends before posting affiliate links on their pages. I personally don't like it, but have done it when it was requested by a legitimate FB friend. Those people reciprocated, and I got the best of the deal. I tripled my reach by doing that. Take the time, it is WORTH it..

You could try but I am sure it wouldn't last long and you could also lose your account for that.

Still sounds like spam and will probably get reported as spam because the person didn't directly request the information you are sending.

If we send direct message to unknown friend or send friend request too, this will mark you spam if people report for you.
