Can I ask for "Electronic Signature" in a Web Form?

I'm creating an ecommerce website for a client that sells gun powder.

By law, every new customer must sign an "Order Statement Form" and provide it to the merchant (my customer) before placing an order.

With the way my client currently has his website, all new customers need to download a .txt file, print it, sign and complete the short form, scan it into their computer and email it to my client.

As you could imagine, this seems like a little too much work and my client is obviously losing a good amount of sales because of this.

With the new website I am creating for him, I want to turn this into a web form. Since my client NEEDS them to sign the document, how would I go about having them do that in a web form?

Is it OK if I provide a text field where they can type their name as if they were signing the form? Would this still be a legal document?

I've heard of "electronic signatures" used by some companies and the IRS before...

Can anyone help me out? Thanks!

You'll really need to ask a lawyer familar with the laws on the subject.

Though it might be legal on somethings, it might not be on others.

Take a look at digistamp or e-lock. They have solutions and a lot of background on how digital signatures work.
