Please Give a (Brutally) Honest Site Review

I'm wanting to launch a simple web-design business - I've spoken about it before here. I have created a squeeze page for local small business and a main site. Both seem a little drab though, and on the main site, the sidebar is way too empty. I have no clue what to put in there though. I need some advice, and some likes and dislikes on the site. You won't hurt my feelings - I think the site(s) look amateurish, unlike my own normal site, but I'm having a hard time doing "professional" and "attractive" at the same time. Give a girl a hand!

I like the colors. The header is simple as it should be for this type of sites.
Overall i would say it focuses on the information it delivers and it doesn't distract the visitor with annoying design colors or graphics.

I'll give it a 7/10. This is my "brutal" review

Ok, from one web developer to another...here are my OPINIONS. *smiles*

The squeeze page is pretty good. The header is a bit too simple - it looks like a default. With a web design offer, I'd go a bit more polished. The star with the green lettering is not doing it for me. I think you'd be better off with a higher-contrast, and focusing in on the important bits (see attached). I agree, though. About 7/10.

Your website... I have to say it's not nearly as close to what I would consider professional design. It's not terrible, but it's also not really a showcase for excellence in design.

Granted, from many viewpoints, mine may not be, either. Your clients may want exactly what you are offering. I would say, though, that on your own site, you should take some time to really customize the look and feel, and to avoid the "open" photo in a widget look.

I don't know your experience or drive, but you may have exactly the skills you need for your area and target market. If you're looking for mid- to high-end work, though ($1,000 - $25,000 projects as opposed to $50 - $300 sites), I'd take some time to work with other designers (perhaps WHILE running your business), to learn more about the how and why of design and basic coding.

Again,t his is my opinion, and you are doing better than most, so feel free to ignore me. I am not interested in being brutal, but I am in being honest, because you asked.

AND, I'm willing to help or give me opinion ANY time. I'm always happy to lend a hand. *smiles*

Quite simply and brutally honestly; no. It doesn't work how you've currently made it - the structure, positioning and general framework to the page is excellent though. IMHO it's spot on, only your styling looks like it has come from Microsoft Word 95.

For a more modern and stylish look you could add gradients or fades to style some of your page using CSS and change the font of the writing.

A simple reflection in a graphics editer (and perhaps some effects) on the logo image will modernise a large part of that page.

I like the star, it's cool, but again can be styled to appear as if to be more expensive; like you've spent good money to product your website.

That's my honest opinion my friend.
