I would like to know people's opinions. Do you think it is best to redirect pages not found back to your default page, or to have a custom 404 Not Found page?

Definatly a custom 404 error page. Otherwhise people will be confused when they are looking for a specific page but get redirected to the main page all the time. You def. need to tell them that the page they are looking for has been removed.

You can of course include a link to your mainpage in the 404 error page and tell people that the site has been removed but that they can continue browsing on your site by going back to the main page.

  • I always use a 404, too, so the visitor doesn't get confused by getting redirected immediately back to the home page, as mentioned above. Also, I use it to throw in a few extra keywords and such. THEN I re-direct them back to the home page a few seconds later.
