Wordpress: website revamp - categories, posts and pages

Hi Warriors,

I am in the process of revamping one of the sites. I have a couple of questions and hope somebody can clarify these issues.

1. I would like to reclassify posts into new categories. I wonder if posts URLs stay the same when I do it. I have other websites linking to those posts, and do not want to compromise people's ability to find it.

2. I would like make some of the previously created pages as posts. Is there a "right" way of doing it. Are the old page URL and a new post URL going to be the same. Some sites are currently linking to these pages, and I would like to preserve URL. Is it possible?

Thanks in advance,
Evgueni

    1. It depends on the permalink structure: if they included the %category%... then you are in trouble. Otherwise it doesn't matter.

    2. There is no right or wrong way... but again the URL depends on the permalink structure.
e.g. Pages (with 'nice' permalinks) always have example.com/page-title structure; posts have similar permalink ONLY if the blog had the %postname% (and nothing else) in its permalink settings.

Which means, without knowing the exact permalink structure nobody can answer your questions.

Thank you, Istvan. Appreciate your help.

      Current permalink structure is:
      /%postname%/
I guess I will be fine for reclassifying categories.

As for changing pages to posts, do I have to publish a new post with the same title and delete current page? Some of the pages have comments on them. How would I deal with those?

      Thanks again,
      Evgueni

It took about 2 and half minutes to find this using G.:

I got it now. Thanks again Istvan.

However, I do realize now that the existing permalink structure is not optimal for navigation purposes.

I would like to change permalink structure to
          /%category%/%postname%/

I do realize that by doing it, all URL posts are going to be changed. Have to find a good way to redirect current posts URLs to new URLs .

    Hi,

There are several plugins that can accomplish the redirects for you. If you can't get it to work and/or would prefer to do it manually, look into using .htaccess redirects.
