Ok moving on to Wordpress - help please

Ok I get it now. I am going to move away from html css site design to Wordpress. I have resisted with all I've got but after doing some consulting for my wife's company who use wordpress I see how quickly I can get things done. Now that I have learned how to integrate my php code into Wordpress I can see that this is a no brainer really. I have been wasting FAR too much time in site design and layouts. That time could be put to much better use. So...

How about a quick start in terms of using Wordpress in Internet Marketing? What themes and plugins are recommended or best of the best? In particular for squeeze pages and landing pages and also member backoffice for delivering product and training? What other plugins do you consider essential?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

        Hmm...
I work with WordPress (almost) since it was invented ten years ago - got involved one yaer later, i.e. 9 years ago. I am not a coder geek (although I can and did develope many WP themes) but understand HTML/CSS and can read, although not write, PHP. I call myself a super WP user... because I approach and solve every WP related issue from a user standpoint - meaning what I don't know how to solve, it's not worth bothering with

However, for squeeze pages and/or simple sales pages I never thought to use WP - it's an overkill.

And to be honest: if you want to have unique sites... you will still have to design and code a unique theme, so nothing changed. Yeah, of course, thousands of themes are ready and with minimal tweaking they can be applierd to zillion sites. I use such themes as well, when the effort of building a new custom theme wouldn't pay the ROI as expected.

One more thing: there are no 'mandatory' or 'more marketing friendly' themes and plugins. The problem is, the real designers and (valid) XHTML/CSS coders are clueless about marketing.... while the IM 'producers' that spit out weekly a new theme or plugin* are even more ignorant about code, security, standard etc. than the average WP hobby blogger.

So no, your troubles are not over - if you take seriously what you do

I recommend creating child themes based on Twenty Twelve or Twenty Eleven. The price is right, and the base theme will always be compatible with any new WordPress versions for the foreseeable future.

Sometimes even Twenty Ten, whichever basic layout and features seem appropriate for the site.

If you are familiar with CSS and PHP, extensive customization should be a cakewalk.

Your best bet is to get familiar with all the good info in the Codex Main Page « WordPress Codex

    Here are some good Plugins:
All In One SEO or Yoast SEO
    JetPack by WordPress.com
    Google XML Sitemaps
NextGEN Gallery with Social Gallery if you use photos
Microkid's Related Posts if multiple articles

What type of content will your website serve? Will you be creating content often? Will you offer products for customers to purchase?

It is a total nonsense to suggest any plugins (or ask for them!!!) if you have no idea what kind of site is going to be.

Once again people: there are no "must have" plugins. Period.

BTW, do you have any idea which plugin from your list will slow down your installation the most? :p

Yes. At least in the format you have asked: Because you did NOT ask "information" about specific plugins (i.e. user experience), instead you posted a very vague question in general.

For everybody who asks and/or replies to useless questions about
          - must-have plugins
          - "marketing" plugins
          - ball-scratching plugins etc...

And that's exactly why your OP doesn't make sense...
What is internet marketing? (for you - because I might have a different idea, and the half million WF members all have different ideas!)
What would be a goal of your WP powered site and what additional features do you need to achieve those goals?

There are many similar questions that you MUST answer before even thinking what kind of CMS you'd need, what kind of special features should that CMS have, what kind of content will be presented, how that content will be organized/structured etc.

Vague questions like yours are useless waste of time and space. Usually, threads like that are deleted and/or closed.

I agreed. Plugins loaded should really conform to what the site should be.

I've worked with other people who load up about 10 plugins which shouldnt have been needed and slow the site down considerably!

If you're looking for a nice framework with either Sass or Less compatibility, take a look at Bones.

yeah... difficult to recommend plugins without knowing what the site is going to be about. And Paul is right... loading too many plugin will definitely slow your site down.

There are a lots of plugins that could be put into a good use. Start with security plugins first, database backing, cache handling, forms for contacts, social exposure: facebook and such.

Admin, please delete my thread. I honestly thought I was asking a legitimate question but according to some it is evidently completely ridiculous. So please by all means delete this thread and I will seek help elsewhere where my question might be more welcome. Thank you
