The problem of the self-hosted autoresponders (specially the free ones that usually are not as good as the paid ones) is that they are close friends of the spam box.

I have a very professional self-hosted autoresponder, Interspire, and I use it for some of my lists. My main autoresponder is Aweber, though. Not too long ago I made test. I was sending emails with free gifts to one of my lists once a week using Aweber and my open rate was between 40% and 50%. One day I decided to make test. I created a backup file of my list with Aweber, downloaded it to my computer and then uploaded the list to Interspire. I sent the gift of that week using Interspire instead of Aweber. My open rate was close to 20%. Terrible.

What does this story proves? That self-hosted autoresponders have a very high spam rate. The problem is that many of your subscribers won't even know about your messages or simply ignore them if they end up going to the spam folder.

So my advice is: spend $20 a month and use Aweber or GetResponse. It's not possible to succeed online without making small investments and this one is essential.
