Need advice on maximizing revenue and preventing complete loss of said revenue?

About a year ago I threw together a simple site that targets a very specific niche. My site is a tool that helps people use a specific service. I have no products to sell or anything like that, it's literally just a free "tool" that works hand in hand with said service.

I developed the site to help out a few people and to learn a few new programing languages, never thinking it would take off, but things are starting to really pick up...

Currently, the site gets around 3,000 unique visitors every day. I am using a mixture of adsense and amazon for ads and i'm generating $1200-$1500 every month with probably 90% of that coming from adsense and the remainder from amazon.

I am very happy with the revenue the site is generating, but I feel like I'm missing out somewhere since I'm only really using adsense.

I also have the issue of potentially losing everything overnight...

Since the site is based 100% on a specific service, if CompanyX decides to shut that service down, my site would be completely useless. Bye bye visitors, bye bye revenue.

So to sum it all up, I guess what I'm asking is:

1) Should I be looking at better ways to make revenue other than adsense? I know the answer is yes, but some ideas would be great!

and

2) Has anyone dealt with a situation where their site would be rendered completely useless because it was based on another service out of your control? If so, what did you do to prevent this? For instance, a blog specifically about google+ might become pretty useless when google shuts down google+ here in the near future.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Turn the table a bit on this.. what can you do to help ensure the product you are piggybanking doesnt go under? Just a quick question.. do they have an affiliate program? Even if they dont.. i would try and contact the company and see if you can work out a deal of some sort to help them drive traffic

To answer your second question... what can you do? If you have a blog about G+ you transition your content to another social outlet.

  • Have a side bar on your blog, and sell related affiliate products, that compliments the services visitors use on your blog.

For example, if your blog is promoting the use of a free mortgage calculator, then sell a related $47 - $97 ebook/audio/video course, on 'how to buy investment properties', to generate rental income. If your blog is receiving 3000 unique visitors per day, and your $97 info product converts at 1%, then you will generate an additional $2,910 in sales per day. That's an income of $87,300 generated in sales over a 30 day period, and $1,047,600 in sales over a 12 month period.

Sell affiliate products of other reputable product vendors in that niche, or you can create your own niche related information products, to sell in the side bar on your blog.

Without knowing the details around the site and what it's about it's very difficult to give advice.

Are there any affiliate programs for that niche?

I'm a software developer and have had plenty of instances of stuff being shut down.

Just recently Amazon have shut off my access to their API. It's not a huge loss for me, but it would have been if I had a $10,000 a month affiliate store or something!

I got my PayPal account banned too.

The moral of the story is to NEVER rely on other websites or services.

With my current data hungry site, I've been storing a lot of the useful data. So if the day comes when I can't get the data anymore, I won't care so much.

You mentioned that you created a free tool to help people use a service.

You can create an upgraded paid version of this tool that will offer more value to your audience.

Since you know how to code, you can also create other paid product tools.

If you don't want to create anything additional, include affiliate offers that relate to your service.

Stay connected to the problems you're solving for people or you'll lose sight of the economic opportunity. If you have visitors, then you've done something right to this point. Capitalise the opportunity by figuring out what you did right or whether it's a complete fluke and can't be replicated. You may need to actually talk to some of your site visitors...

First of all you already know that you should monetize your website other than adsense.

first of all let me tell you that if you are making a $1,000 with AdSense then you can easily make $10,000 with affiliate Marketing with the same amount of traffic.

so what you need to do in whichever field you have your website start promoting the related products to them.

you can link some YouTube video that will recommend the products.

you can link some blogs that will recommend the products.

you can also promote the courses related to that field.

You can also add some banner on your website of affiliate products.

and for the affiliate products you can simply search your field + affiliate program on Google and you will get a lot of affiliate programs.

and you do not need to create your own course you can simply do affiliate Marketing where you will promote other people's courses/products in return for a Commission.

and as you are giving the tool for free so what I will recommend you to is start building an email list tell your users that if you want to use this free tool you have to give your email address and also tell them that you will be sending the valuable tips on their email.

so after you have collected the emails now if the website is going to shutdown you do not have to worry because you have already collected a lot of emails.

and you can simply promote the products to them on their email.

and if you want to prevent yourself from going down because the related company X is going out of business.

so one of the way is to replace that service with something related stuff.

or if you can get in touch with another company like X with the you should do that.

and one more thing you can do you can also become the company X if there is more exposure in that business.

for example you said a blog on Google Plus will be worthless when the Google will shutdown Google Plus absolutely.

but what you can do you can update that blog and can do something like the best alternative for Google Plus because after that the people will be searching for the Google Plus alternative.

and in this way you will be ready for the future as well and you will not kill your current traffic as well.

Find another source of fulfillment, so you can switch the service out if Company A disappears.

If you can't find another source, start reinvesting some of your profits and develop your own.

Look into the Laddering concept: what is there for your customers to buy after they've got the first thing? It's easier to get a happy customer to buy again rather than get a brand new buyer. And your cost of customer acquisition is really low now, maybe as low as $0, because you already have them on your buyers list.
