Blog Comments For Linkbuilding?

I am about to roll out a small nice affiliate site. I have been given the go-ahead, from 3 bloggers in a topic relevant to my niche, to post links in the comment section of their blogs, provided they are reasonable in number, and provide some value to their readers. The other sites aren't asking for links back to their site in return (which as I understand Google can penalize you for since they think it's just a linkbuilding scheme).

Two of these seem to have do-follow links for their comment links.

1: Are these links just as good as "guest post" links in terms of SEO? Does Google differentiate between links in comment sections and links in main content areas?

2. Can these be overused to the extent that it would get my site penalized by Google? How many would be too many? 5? 10? 200?

3. Obviously anything that gets my pages in front of readers is good, but from an SEO perspective, are links in comment sections for the time/effort?

    1. No/Yes
    2. Yes
    3. Sometimes

Any link you can place, yourself, on another website (such as blog comments or forum links) are generally disregarded by Google, whether they are followed or not. The purpose of links in their algorithm was to give weight when another site sends their visitors away from their own site over to your site because the info is so great. That's a pretty powerful recommendation if you think about it. They know that people can link to their own sites in blog comments, so they have devalued those links. They are not editorially placed.

If too much of your link profile is any one thing - especially links you can place yourself - it could result in a manual penalty for trying to manipulate the search results. Algorithms will just ignore them but I imagine they've got some sort of flagging system that alerts manual reviewers to check out a site after some sort of threshold is reached (but who really knows how they do it in Googleville).

All that said, if a blog is highly relevant to your niche and traffic from that blog is highly targeted, links on them are great things to have - not for any SEO benefit, but for the highly targeted traffic. You're wasting your time if you think comment links will help you rank better.

The best you can get from commenting on other blogs is traffic back to your own site. comment links are nofollow and google does not attach much importance to them

Yes, there are still some very obscure, low quality blogs where you can still get do-follow links. Regardless of whether they are highly regarded blogs or obscure ones, why on earth would Google give power to any link that anyone can place, themselves? It's common sense. Comment links stopped working many, many years ago for SEO.

Bottom Line: If you are putting comment links on blogs that are relevant and that could get you some targeted traffic that will buy, go for it. Otherwise, do not waste your time. It is NOT going to help you rank better, whether they are followed links or not.

Imo typically building links from blog comments doesn't work too well. Just my experience but yours may be different.
