How to rank a page for several hundred longtail keywords

Hi, if I look at a competitor's page and see that it's ranking for several hundred keywords (mostly in the top 10 that is), if I just target the same main keyword, will my page also rank for the same several hundred keywords, or is there more to it than that? If so, what factors are at play, and what might I need to do when writing?

You don't need to approach competition directly. However, you can pick some keywords that you think can rank and check for your competitors.

Get backlinks with different keywords and you can end up ranking for all of them. Might not be worth your while.

Example: if you have a page about yoga mats ranking for dumbbells, the visitors you get will be disappointed, not buy.

If you have a page about blue yoga mats and are ranking for red yoga pants, some visitors will not bother, some will look for other pages.

If you have a page about yoga mats and are ranking for blue yoga mats, green yoga mats, extra large yoga mats, then, yes.
