Promote Free Software For Download

We have a new piece of software that is useful to anyone managing a lot of communications.

We'd like to give it out for free in the beginning.

We were looking into using affiliates but in reality that doesn't work because when you give out stuff for free, there aren't that many people waiting around to split $0 profit. Should we look for marketers that have business related lists and pitch to them handing our soft out as part of their communications?

Due to the nature of the software it cannot be a PDA (portable) at this time, although we're looking into that.

Besides CPC are there any other (2022) ideas?

Thank you.

You can look at software review sites on Google and submit your product. I've seen success before. Capterra is a big one I know off hand and have used personally.

Thank you for the reply. We did indeed look at Capterra and have an 'appointment' to talk to one of their managers. Curious what their pitch will be. Did you guys have success with Capterra?

What about offering it for free for a while and then get users to subscribe and pay going forward. This way, you get users hooked and using it and they'll be more likely to pay to continue using it if they are already and are relying on it. Kind of a longer term trial method. Neil Patel did this with Ubersuggest and that worked well. I think I used it for at least 6 months before he monetized it. I was happy to pay going forward as I found it useful.

Hello and thank you for the reply.

Maybe I'm not understanding something but you say "What about offering it for free".

In our original post we wrote (2nd line from top) "We'd like to give it out for free in the beginning."

It's still an uphill struggle trying to find free channels for our particular market.

The question is how to give it for free (What sites are there where you can do it? What other methods than using sites where people download software are there?).

OP Who also sells to the people you want to download your software? Ask them if they'd live to give it as a freebie to their prospects (they may use it to grow their list, for instance).

Yes, but we're still in the embryonic stages here. Exploring Capterra and other such options. We're about to launch a test campaign on Capterra. We're also considering Clickbank and other affiliate network.

Do you have a social media following? If you have followers, then this is one place to promote it and give away for free. Word of mouth from those followers could see some good momentum for your software. If you can join specific niche groups on Facebook, for example, who are relevant to your software, then these are highly engaged users who are likely to take up a free offer.

Unfortunately we don't have a social media presence (at least nothing significant) since the product is new and personally not many involved in this project have time for social media. However we are going to try the Facebook group approach and see what we can get out of that. Thank you.
