I'm constantly amazing at how much good design can improve the performance of a site. I work for a fairly large directory website and every time we change the design, colors, size, and location of page items. We see an improve on the sites conversion.

I totally agree with you on that one!
I just recently updated my freebie website to increase the opt-in conversions. Instead of having a traditional long sales page with an opt-in form at the bottom, I created a 'horizontal-style' site with the opt-in box on the fold of the page.
Now everything is clear and when a person visits they know exactly what's what.
Simple design, less text and clarity goes a long way!
