A quick guide to using keywords and backlinks.

Keywords and website content.

Keywords are currently the SEO buzz at the moment, and have many website owners heads spinning. I've written this article to try to explain a few things for you. Blue Frog SEO Solutions carry out many tests and exercises to establish what really works within the SEO conundrum. keywords are one of many methods and hopefully after reading this article we'll be able to help get you on your way to the top of the search engines. Not many SEO companies give away their secrets and believe me we still have many other methods secretly hidden away but we do like to advise and provide hot tips on fighting your way to the top.

We may as well begin with your domain name. Let's say that the name of your site is eBook Publishing, just an example. Should your site be ebookpublishing.com or ebook-publishing.com? There's a lot of debate about which would be best to use. Some will advise to use the hyphen because it may be easier for the search engine bots to read, but, there's no real evidence that supports this and you should use your own discretion: in my opinion its best to leave out any non letters so i personally would go for without but its entirely up to you.

Your domain name should also contain one of your keywords and ideally in the first word. So, for example let's say your business is about ebook publishing. After keyword research you find surprisingly "eBook Publishing" would be a keyword along with "eBook, creative writing" and so forth. You can probably guess where I'm going with this. If available go for the most obvious - ebookpublishing.com. If you find this domain isn't available the try to integrate one of your keywords as the first work into your domain.

Ok, to quickly note: Keywords are what people use to find you in search engines when they type in a phrase like "ebooks", you want that person to find you. If your business has fifty different pages, that feature fifty different products or services then its highly beneficial to dedicate your efforts unique to each page. Each page should be keyword rich keeping your products and searched terms in mind. On one page you offer "eBook Self-publishing", (we'll stick to "eBooks" as its fresh in my mind as I've recently carried out a lot of work for one of my clients on this topic) and on another page you offer "creative writing courses" then you would use your relevant keywords per page, keeping your page content keyword rich.

The best way to find out what the best keywords would be for your site would be to put yourself in the shoes of your potential clients. Ask yourself the question. What phrase(s) would you use to find each of your products? Answer that question yourself but also carry out a street survey and ask random members of the public, this way you'll identify what keywords best suits your product or services. We even do this now when carrying out research for clients and is one of the best methods.

After you settle the keyword debate, think about keyword density. Think of Keyword density as a percentage. Let's say you have 100 words in your body text, and your keywords are mentioned 5 times throughout your content, then you have 5% keyword density. Its really quite simple but the mistake that most people make is going overboard with keywords.

Have a look at my example to see what happens when someone goes overboard. The keyword in this example is "eBook Publishing"

The recommended use of keywords would be:

Our website offers a fantastic opportunity for self publishing authors to promote their eBook and create a buzz about their new title. eBook self publishing is growing extremely fast throughout the world and many authors are now beginning to surface and promote their work through us online.

Here the text is keyword rich and the text flows naturally, this example is good use of keywords to the number of words in the paragraph.

Below is an example of how not to use keywords:

eBook self publishing ebook website offers a fantastic ebook self publishing, ebook opportunity for self publishing ebook authors to promote their eBook and self published work. Create a buzz about your self published eBook to help sell your eBook. eBook publishing is growing extremely fast throughout the eBook world and many self publishing eBook authors are now beginning to surface and promote their EBooks.

There is an overuse of keywords to the number of words in this paragraph. Having in mind that the recommended keyword density is from 3 to 7%, anything above this, say 10% density starts to look very much like keyword stuffing and it is likely that will not get unnoticed by search engines. A text with 10% keyword density can hardly make sense, if read by a humans.

Top sites are paying freelance writers to develop keyword rich content everyday and why shouldn't you? There are hundreds of places on the Internet at this very moment with content writers waiting to write killer content for your site, most of them are experienced with SEO requests and you'll notice a turn around by just viewing the stats of your website. The overall goal is to keep your clients coming back, grab their attention with useful information so that they can browse through your site to see what else you have to offer and that's priceless.

Backlinks

Ok you may not know this but Links are the "IN" at the moment. You can gain search engine rankings by linking to other top sites. linking to other websites sounds simple and it is but there are a few things you must take into account.

The website that the links to your website come from must include:

- A Google PageRank, ideally PR3 and above would be beneficial.
- Relevant to your site and keywords. There's no point in linking your website about eBook Self Publishing to an Online Casino. Search engines will pick up on this and it won't be counted and may even penalise you.

You may even be able to negotiate some reciprocal links back.

Links to your site makes your site look important to search engines and if you find a considerable amount of sites that want to link to you then then search engines will reward you generously. I can't give you a definitive number of links that you'll need as this varies from niche to niche.

Carry out competitor research using various online tools found here to check the number of backlinks to your main competitors website and aim to exceed that amount.

Another good for of building backlinks is to comment on relevant forums and Bloggs. Here you need to be careful not to spam as this wont give you a very good reputation.

Alternatively you can purchase links to your site where the supplier will build and negotiate links. Blue Frog SEO Solutions offer a link building service and can be found here.
