Is The Downturn Helping MLM's?

I just read a blog by "imvaltaylor" on Warrior Forum, rather than comment to his, it gave me an inspiration to write my own. I may have a perspective that many people don't have. I work and live in the Detroit area. I worked as an automotive engineer for one to the top suppliers. I was faced week after week with being laid off, so I felt I needed a plan B.
This led me to trying a MLM company again thinking this one was different and had potential for me to make living from it. I witnessed a few people that it did work for. But being an engineer by background and my circle of contacts were either engineers, or reps for companies that sold to my company. This did not allow me to take off and be successful in this new business.
What I found was MLMs still have a very bad reputation in the general public, most people still consider them scams and pyramid schemes. Perhaps because MLMs still hype themselves way too much. It is true they offer unlimited income, but this is for the very few that can market themselves and have a good contact list. My success level was very low using the old school MLM methods - you know selling to your friends and family.
Getting back to the downturn, things are pretty bleak around Detroit. The number of people laid off is staggering. The economy here is so intertwined with the auto industry that people lost their jobs and businesses that you may not have thought had anything to do with the auto industry. Of course the real estate bust did not help either.
But with this environment of so many people needing income, you maybe would have thought this was fertile ground to build a team of MLM entrepreneurs in your down line. Well what I found was people would rather sit around collect unemployment than try something new. The laid off automotive worker is not the target market for MLMs and they are not going to buy any of the products even if it can save them money from a company that is a "scam".
You know who was interested in the MLM business? Business owners who were still in business but wanted to replace their lost income during the downturn. So no matter who you think needs an opportunity the most, it is still the people who maybe don't need it but who have the right mindset.
So what's needed for a newbie to take his MLM business online? Imvaltaylor's list is pretty good, all good points but the main thing to get started is to have a good mentor with a step by step process in place. This means a real person to talk to and learn from. You can learn everything on your own, but why would you want to waste so much time when there are others that have done that and willing to show someone how to avoid the common mistakes?
