Are you addicted to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and all the other social networks on the web? If so, you can turn your addiction into a full-time job by going into business as a social media consultant. We will look at what is involved and how you can get started.

In this day and age, social media is ubiquitous and the vast majority of people in the developed world use it to some extent. That's why businesses have started to realize that social media can be put to use as a marketing tool. It's not just big corporations. Small and medium sized businesses are also seeing the potential. It's these smaller enterprises that you can service as a social media consultant. The role basically involves advising businesses about how they can use social media and then managing their social media activity.

It's not a get-rich quick scheme because you will need to put in a lot of effort to win clients and do their social media work for them. However, once you start to approach local businesses and present to them the benefits of using social media, you will soon have some clients signed up.

The best way to 'sell' the benefits of social media marketing to prospective clients is to point to examples of other businesses who are using it to good effect. If you can find any of their direct competitors who are using social media, then it will be even easier to demonstrate the advantages.

Once you have signed-up your first client, the hard work begins. You will need to set up profiles for your client on the social networks you will be using. The next step is to build up the number of friends and followers in the client's networks. This is time-consuming because you need to grow the followers as organically as possible.

As your client list grows, you may need to hire some help to handle the day-to-day social media tasks. You will soon find out that social media marketing requires regular work. You cannot work on a client's profile for a few hours and then not touch it again for several days. Ideally, you need all your client's profiles to be active on a daily basis. To achieve this you may decide to outsource the regular updating to remote workers. This frees up your time to sign-up more new clients.

Hopefully you will now understand the business potential of becoming a social media consultant and also see that it requires hard work and dedication to be successful.

With 58 blog entries, I can see that you practice what you preach. Social media done right is hard work. But, it can be so profitable. It sure beats an extra $12/hour job.

Sometimes the variety hypnotizes us. We have too many choices...what do we do next? The answer, "Sort it out. Decide what is most important..." Of course the other answer would be....do something--anything!
