Matt, When you say content you must be talking about readers and therefore affiliate marketing. Google is a machine and doesn't care about content. Keyword optimization and backlinks is what gets you on the first page. For Adsense earnings great content isn't that important, you WANT them to click off your page.
When we consider a good profitable website that is consistent we're going to need good content. I wouldn't put my eggs in a basket that Google condemns as bad.

Google is all about good content, everything they do is geared toward weeding out spammy websites from the good content websites. Google has over 100 factors that contribute to your SERPS and one of them is human evaluation. Google has employees who scan through websites and giving them a rank according to how it much it "enhances the users experience".

Google created the trustfilter aka sandbox which means any new websites are put up to the challenge to gain Google's trust before they will allow it to rank. It's push pull, the more backlinks you get, the more you're edging towards a negative impact on your website. As we know, the trustfilter is dynamic and constantly evolving so rather than try to cheat Google all the time, why not just give it what it wants?

There's no substitute for good content, the more unique highly rated content you get the more Google trusts your website and tags it as important.

I'm glad I read where you say content comes before promotion. Makes me feel a bit more comfortable to read that when I think of all the promotion tools I dont have time for.

actually I hired an intern to help me ghost write the content I started and didn't have time to complete (because I had to promote to put $ in the bank)

which comes first, the chicken or the egg?

I'm going to hire a body to push the buttons on the 'blaster' tools I use so I can write better content.

The local newspaper has taken an interest in my work, now I've got to REALLY make sure my content is good!

btw- How did you get your WF blog to have this line above the blog post:

"This is my personal blog, i use it to organize..."

    ?
