So, the blog is set up (a little hidden away in the options - but looks great once found).

I notice that the Google PR update went through recently. Mainly due to one of the sites that I'd been working hard on promoting having dropped (although overall traffic is up).

The PR of any site is a very fickle thing, especially where Google is concerned. It does rather bring back the notion (that I'm sure many of us believe already) that ranking purely by PR is impossible to win and that we should just concentrate on winning by great content.

One thing that stuck out to me, is that doing a search using the links: prefix (i.e. trying to find the valid backlinks leading to the site) gives a much reduced list. For instance, take Top Poker Blogs, which is a site I have big plans for, and it only reports one backlink.

So, is marketing at anything other than respected high PR sites dead? Or is it just a flawed reporting mechanism? Should we building forum backlinks?

The jury is still out to me, but all opinions are welcome.
