As well as my niche blog I've also established accounts and posted content to a number of other sites to help build my niche footprint.
These sites include:

Google Knol
Wikidot

Wetpaint

I've posted content and added links to my blog to all of these sites. They will help with indexing, authority backlinks and of course targetted traffic.

Hi John,
usually, when you start that kind of project, do you have a precise goal in regard of traffic, roi and time it will take or do you go one step at a time?

The strategy is relatively straightforward.. I want to get more backlinks and traffic that my competitors.
A great place to start is to search Google with your top five keyword phrases, see which sites are at positions #1 and #10.
Go to the MarketLeap Link Popularity checker and enter the two URLs for #1 and #10. The results will give you a very rogh guide on how much link building you will need to do to get a page one position. (Hint: you need more links than the site at #10)
