"What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve" - Napoleon Hill
As I am writing this chapter the television, radio and newspapers in the UK are all reporting on the current state of the economy. Apparently we are on the brink of an economic recession which means that our economy is experiencing negative growth. The consistent reporting of this through all of the media is creating fear in people’s minds. Everyone is talking about it and the fear of what could happen to them as a result of this 'impending crisis' is at the forefront of a lot of people’s minds. Now what this means is that we are possibly actually working ourselves into an economic crisis by thinking about it and the negative consequences of it too often. It is becoming the dominant thinking for a lot of people who are finding it hard to think about anything else.
By causing people to focus their minds on what they fear we can end up with people possessing a poverty mindset. In other words our ‘minds’ have been ‘set’ to think poverty. They are constantly focusing on lack which becomes the dominant thought pattern. As any dominant thought pattern will attract to it similar thoughts, just as a magnet attracts metallic objects, a person whose mind is dominated with thoughts of lack will attract more thoughts along those lines. They will focus primarily on what they don’t have, or what they don't want, and then they will begin to notice more the things that are lacking in their lives. As a result, their focus will be so dominated with what they don’t have – or are not likely to have, that they will not be able to think about generating wealth.
It is almost impossible to become wealthy whilst the majority of the thoughts that dominate your mind are focussed on lack or poverty. Poverty is a state of mind and nothing else, yet it is a state of mind that can destroy one’s chances of achieving riches. Fear of poverty is parasitic thinking that we talked about in chapter nine. It can eat away at you from inside destroying the creative imagination and enthusiasm needed to create and generate wealth. Such thinking makes us doubt ourselves and encourages procrastination, the ability to put off until tomorrow that which we should be doing today.
“Business opportunities are like buses, there's always another one coming.” - Richard Branson
To be rich you have to create a wealth mindset. To do that you have to train your mind to look for the wealth making opportunities that will come your way.
When you do this you start to notice more those opportunities that you didn’t notice before – but which were always there. By re-programming the way you think and adopting a better focus you will literally tune your mind in to notice those opportunities, circumstances and situations that will be drawn into your new focus. Money making ideas and business opportunities will seem to be constantly coming your way. The real truth of the matter is that they have always been there. It’s just that you weren’t looking – you were tuned into the wrong frequency or you were watching the wrong channel so to speak.
This belief is also echoed by Napoleon Hill, one of the greatest and earliest producers of the modern genre of personal-success literature. Hill examined the power of personal beliefs, and the role they play in personal success.
As part of his phenomenal research, which lasted over twenty-five years, Hill interviewed many of the most famous people of the time, including Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Ford, John D Rockefeller, F W Woolworth, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and many other successful people to find out what the secrets were to their unrivalled success. His findings were eventually published in his best selling book entitled Think and Grow Rich, which was first published in 1938.
An extract from one of Napoleon Hill’s speeches highlights his findings:
“I think if there was ever a time in this country when men and women need to recognise the power of their own minds - when they need to overcome frustration and fear. That time is now. There is too much fear spread around. Too many people talking about depression, who are trying very hard to see if we can’t work ourselves into a depression, or if we can’t work ourselves into another world war. Lets get our minds, each and every one of us, as individuals fixed upon a definite goal so big and so outstanding that we’ll have no time to think about these things we don’t want.
Do you know what are the queer things about mankind consist in the fact that the vast majority of people are born, grow up, struggle, go through life as misery and in failure. Never getting out of life what they want. Not recognising that it would be just as easy - by the turn of a hand so to speak – to switch over and get out of life exactly what they want, not recognising that the mind attracts the thing that the mind dwells upon.
You can think about poverty, you can think about failure, you can think about defeat, and that’s exactly what you will get.”
Now is possibly the right time to heed the words of the great man and his words of wisdom.
If you want financial riches in your life you need to commit your thinking with passion and with fortitude. You need not to be ‘hypnotised’ by the media stories of gloom and doom that we are constantly being bombarded with, which could easily result in you believing that things are possibly a lot worse than they are, or that there is no hope. You also need to go on a negativity fast. You need to learn to ignore the inner little critical voice that exists inside us that has probably been pre-programmed to lower your self-confidence and belief in yourself. You need not to let what others say affect you on a deep emotional level. Do not join the ‘fellowship of the miserables’, but become someone who is in full control over their life.
Keep your mind strong. Shield yourself from the parasitical negativity of others. Focus only on the positive. Look for the opportunities that exist that others fail to see and capitalise on them. Become a beacon of hope for those lost ion the fog of despair.
To quote once more from Napoleon Hills book:
"An individual can create nothing which he or she does not first conceive in the form of an impulse of thought. Following this statement comes another of still greater importance, namely, that THOUGHT IMPULSES BEGIN IMMEDIATELY TO TRANSLATE THEMSELVES INTO THEIR PHYSICAL EQUIVALENT, WHETHER THOSE THOUGHTS ARE VOLUNTARY OR INVOLUNTARY."
Whether we are consciously aware of it or whether we are not, our minds are constantly working on the thoughts that they filter. They work on a hierarchy of importance so the thought that generates the greater emotional response or reaction, becomes the most dominant. If we are not careful gatekeepers the only thoughts that we end up paying attention to are those that cause us the greatest negative emotion, and which are recognisable by feelings of fear, worry or anxiety.
Become the master of your own mind. By doing that you will become the master of your true destiny. All things are available to you – and it all starts with how you choose to think.
The above is an extract from one of the chapters of my new book - 'Understanding Quantum Thinking' which is available on Amazn.co.uk.
